Growing Cabbage in the Wet Season
Hello my beautiful gardeners. I know you have been busy as bees getting your farms ready and your crops down, excitingly anticipating the harvest before the Christmas holidays. I also know that your garden is incomplete without cabbages, but you are unsure if you can grow them in the rains that are now upon us. Well, I am here to tell you that it is quite possible to grow this beloved leafy vegetable during the wet Season. Here are a few tips that will help in guiding you to successfully grow your cabbages through the rains;
* Ensure proper drainage is in place through out your garden to remove excess water resulting from heavy rains.
* During the wet Season, soils that are mostly clayey should be made more loose by incorporating other planting mediums such as coconut peat, ash, paddy shell, black sand and well decomposed manure. This creates better aeration of the soil, hence improving oxygen movement and root development.
* When cultivating cabbages in the wet Season spatial arrangement is of utmost importance. Adequate air flow between each plant will reduce excess moisture that can cause root rot. Plant each seedling 14 to 16 inches apart.
* Do not plant cabbages in an area that is shaded. Exposure to full sunlight is encouraged. This helps to reduce excess moisture in the soil.
* The stem of cabbage plants should be visible at all times, hence all leaves touching the soil, preventing air flow around the stem should be removed as the cabbage grows.
* The first two weeks after planting your cabbage is the most critical period, since it is vulnerable to bud worms and crickets. Beds should be treated one day prior to planting in order to prevent damage to crops by crickets. Also, plants should be treated with a contact insecticide within the first few days of planting to prevent attacks by bud worms.
* During periods of heavy rains the soil becomes less fertile due to leaching of nutrients. The use of foliar fertilizers can be implemented to combat this problem.
* Cabbage plants are plagued by necrosis of the leaves (brown leaves that fold causing the entire head to rot from within). This can be treated with the use of a fungicide. I strongly recommend GLORY, which should be applied at two week intervals.

Hello to all my beautiful gardeners🌱🪴🎋

My absolute favorite tea is made using lemon grass/Fever grass. I love it not only for its flavor and aroma, but also for its many health benefits. Here I will share some of the reasons why I incorporate it into my daily diet. Firstly let me explain some terms so that the information can be received properly.
1. Metabolism: It is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. The by-products of metabolism are free radicals.
2. Free radicals: As the body's cells use oxygen to produce energy, they also produce free radicals. Free radicals are natural by-products of metabolism that cause serious damage if they are allowed to get out of control. Free radicals are unstable molecules which have lost one of their electrons. They replace it by grabbing an electron from another molecule, which kick start a series of electron grabbing among molecules that damages cells and tissues and promotes the degenerative changes that cause ageing and degenerative diseases, including heart disease and cancer. In order to prevent degenerative diseases and ageing we must consume plants that contains phytochemicals.
3. Phytochemicals: These are plant chemicals that are a bioactive non-nutritive substance that react with our bodies to do us good. Phytochemicals belong to a variety of different chemical families such as carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenoids and polyphenols. They work in many ways. The largest number work as antioxidants, inactivating the dangerous free radicals that promote cancer, heart disease and the effects of ageing.
4. Antioxidants: seek out the free radicals and inactivate them. Vitamins A, C and E, and many phytochemicals are antioxidants, potent enemies of the dangerous free radicals.
Since lemon grass contains terpenoids they are an excellent source of antioxidants. Inactivating the dangerous free radicals that are produced daily within our bodies due to metabolism.
Lemon grass tea can be taken as a diuretic. This enables an individual to urine more often ridding the body of excess fluid and sodium.
Consumption of lemon grass increases your metabolism helping in weight loss. Also the use of lemon grass relieves bloating since is has anti inflammatory properties due to the terpenoids present.

Agricultural facts.
As the cassava plant grows 'Galls' will sometimes appear on the leaves. These Galls are abnormal leaf growth due to the stimulation or irritation from the feeding of a pest. When the Galls are removed, cut opened and examined closely, the pest can be seen within its hollow structure. These tiny pests continuously suck the leaves of the cassava plant, sometimes causing them to become brown, hence preventing photosynthesis.
Treatment
The use of a systemic insecticide will alleviate the problem.
