The staff of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Guyana Country Office extend our deepest condolences to the Government and People of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana following the tragic incident involving the MV Barima. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy and support to the families and loved ones of all of those people directly affected.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the impact this tragedy has already had on the families, loved ones, and communities affected. As search and rescue efforts continue, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, those who remain unaccounted for, and all who are facing the pain and uncertainty of this difficult time. We also extend our support and wish strength and recovery to the survivors of this tragedy.

We convey our deepest sympathies to the people and Government of Guyana as the nation grapples with this devastating loss. We wish to acknowledge the dedication and tireless efforts of the search and rescue teams, the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, emergency responders, medical personnel, local fisherfolk, private sector partners, and all others supporting the ongoing response.

At this time of national mourning, UNDP Guyana stands in solidarity with the people of Guyana and reaffirms its readiness to support the Government of Guyana’s response and recovery efforts as needed today and in future.

🌍🌡️ The climate crisis is accelerating, and the warning signs are impossible to ignore.

The latest El Niño is intensifying rapidly, bringing unprecedented global sea surface temperatures, record-breaking heat across Europe, and increasing the likelihood of more frequent and severe extreme weather events worldwide.

From devastating heatwaves to prolonged droughts and heavier rainfall, climate change is amplifying risks to lives, livelihoods, food security and ecosystems.

Now, more than ever, we must invest in climate resilience, strengthen early warning systems, and accelerate action to protect people and the planet.

The time to act is not tomorrow, it's today.
