Introducing the SOJOWB 2025 cohort!

This year's group of emerging journalists, storytellers and filmmakers has come together in Guatemala to sharpen their craft and deepen their understanding of ethical, impact-driven storytelling - both written and visual.

Over the next few weeks, they'll be learning how to tell stories with nuance, rigor, and responsibility, while exploring local responses to complex social and environmental challenges. From interviews and field research to photography and mini documentaries, every piece they create will be grounded in collaboration, context, and care.

We're proud to be guiding this next generation of storytellers - and can't wait to see what they bring to life.

Week 1 wrapped, and what a beginning it's been🤩

We launched this year's SOJOWB program with a powerful panel event in Antigua, diving deep into press freedom, ethical storytelling, and the unique collaboration possible between journalists and NGOs. From there, we made our way to Lake Atitlán - and it's been something special. There's something about Lago Atitlán that slows us down, grounding us as we begin to build stories with care and intention, surrounded by natural beauty, stillness, and spark. We're settling in, and it's already starting to feel like home.

Our days have been filled with quiet focus in the Lemon Tree co-working space, thought-provoking reflection sessions at @.gt, and evenings that turned into something memorable - like the open mic night at Iguana Hostel that none of us expected to be so moving.

Most meaningfully, our participants have begun connecting with changemakers across Guatemala, unearthing stories of resilience, innovation, and impact - all while approaching their reporting with empathy, curiosity, and rigor. Our investigations are in full swing, and the first sparks of storytelling are taking shape. What a privilege to witness this work unfold.

Thank you to everyone who's been part of this journey so far: guest speakers, panellists, hosts, collaborators, and new friends. Your support has made this first week unforgettable.

We can't wait to see what the next few bring.

A day in the life at Lake Atitlán with SOJOWB📸🌋✍️

Mornings begin with a wellness session or heading straight to our co-working space for a workshop on solutions storytelling - fueled by delicious local coffee. Then it’s out into the community: whether that's heading up into town or crossing the lake by lancha to sit down with the people driving change across the region.

It’s the kind of hands-on, real-world learning that stays with you - rooted in place, powered by purpose, and shaped by the people we meet along the way.

It has taken us several days to post this for obvious reasons. Solutions Journalism Without Borders, founder and many alumni are absolutely devastated to hear of Pam's sudden passing (far left).

Pam, originally from Guatemala City but who lived at Lake Atitlan, has been a significant contributor and friend to SOJOWB for years, assisting in translation and field work being a cheerleader to our participants - and whose tenacity, passion, wicked sense of humour and huuuge personality will be remembered, like in this moment hanging off the back of a colectivo in Santiago during a 2023 crew field trip at Lake Atitlan.

Our hearts are broken. You will be so missed 🕊🤍

🚨 FINAL CALL: Last Chance to Join the Guatemala Summer 2025 Program! 🚨

If you've been thinking about joining us at Lake Atitlán this June–July, this is it. Applications are closing very soon, and once they do, we won’t be able to accept any more students for this year's cohort.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:
✅ Spend a life-changing month on the shores of Lake Atitlán, one of the most breathtaking destinations in Central America
✅ Deepen your journalism skills with a focus on high-impact solutions reporting
✅ Learn visual storytelling (micro and short documentaries) — just added to the curriculum after student requests!
✅ Work alongside local changemakers tackling chronic social and environmental challenges
✅ Join a global community of aspiring solutions journalists

Why the urgency? Spaces are extremely limited — we cap our programs to keep them immersive and hands-on. Logistics are being finalized now — we need your confirmation to secure your accommodation, transport, and project placements.

This is the only summer session in Guatemala for 2025 — if you miss it, you’ll have to wait another full year.

If you've been thinking about it, now's the time to take the leap.
The deadline is just around the corner — and we'd love to have you with us on this incredible journey.

🚨 Spots are filling fast! Applications are open for the 2025 Solutions Journalism Without Borders (SOJOWB) study abroad program this June/July in .

SOJOWB is the world’s OG study abroad program focused entirely on solutions journalism — designed to give students hands-on experience reporting what’s working in underrepresented communities.

Why Guatemala?🤔
A country facing some of the world’s most pressing human rights and environmental challenges — from chronic waste management and climate-driven crises to gender-based violence. But what makes it incredible is the power of community-led responses happening every day.

Students will report on grassroots climate action, women-led justice movements, and more — learning what we call “journalism as hope with teeth.”

🎥 NEW THIS YEAR: We’ve added Visual Storytelling Modules — mini-doc and short documentary production — led by our founder, who’s produced 20+ documentaries across Nepal, Morocco, India, Vietnam, and Guatemala.

✅ Spots are limited and filling fast
✅ Financial aid & scholarships available
✅ Applications open now

If this sounds like you (or a student you know), all the info + sign-up is here:

We can’t wait to see the stories that come out of Guatemala this year!
