Brianna's Adventures of 2019

Brianna's Adventures of 2019 As many of you know I will be embarking on two different adventures within the next seven months.

I will be doing my best to post frequent updates about my time spent in Browning, MT this summer and come fall semester, my time in Guatemala.

A busy few weeks here in Guatemala! We had the opportunity to go to the annual festival de los Barriletes (kite festival) and the pictures don't give justice to the incredible amount of creativity and hard work that people put into making these beautiful kites! We also spent some time at Lago Atitlan which is surrounded by just a few of Guatemala's several volcanoes. And finally, my two classmates and I took on the characters of "los tres ratones ciegos" (three blind mice) to take part in the Halloween festivities here in Antigua! Less than three weeks left in this beautiful place, sad to see the time go so quickly.

I can't say that I missed the midterm grind this fall, but there is part of me that missed my traditional track team getaway in northern Wisconsin. Having my friend Sara Decker from school drop time and money to visit me made up for it though! A full weekend of traveling and adventures made me fall even more in love with Guatemala:)

One month ago I arrived in Antigua, Guatemala, not knowing a single person or place. Now, it seems to have become a second home for the time being. Every day, although it has its frustrations, holds a new adventure and lessons to be learned. My classmates and I are growing closer with every minute spent together. It has been a truly special month and I look forward to two more!

Feliz día de la Independencia Guatemalteca! Yesterday, September 15th, the whole city of Antigua gathered to join the celebration happening throughout all of Central America and Mexico to commemorate 198 years of freedom from the rule of Spain. Freedom that they proudly declare as their own. Thousands of students from the city of Antigua represented their schools as they marched on the cobblestone streets. Guatemala's past is complex, and often looked at as harsh but at the end of the day, the Guatemalan people are determined to seek justice and peace among themselves and others. These few low quality pictures, are just a glimpse at the heart of the Guatemalan people.

Bendiciones de Guatemala! Life has begun for me here in Antigua, Guatemala, a place of "eternal spring" as most say. You may notice Ronald McDonald hiding out in what might be the most stunning McDonalds I have ever stepped foot in. Last night around 1am I was startled awake by the sound of Volcano Agua (pictured behind McDonalds) erupting. It shook the entire house and kept me awake for some time as waves of it continued to erupt. It is yet another way to remind me of the great and mighty hand of our God present in and through every aspect of my life. Although it is unlike anything I have experienced, Guatemala is slowly becoming a place to call home for the next three months!

Hey all! Here is a conglomeration of pictures of the summer, more to come, hopefully. As you can see, this summer spent in Browning, Montana on the Blackfeet Native Reservation consisted of many things from attending the community powwows, hiking a few peaks (wind and all), bison feeding, swimming with the native youth, horseback riding, wildlife spotting, and a whole bunch of goofing off. If you couldn't tell from the pictures, the Blackfeet people live in one of the most stunning places in the world (in my opinion:) My heart is full from a special time in a special place with truly special people. I am very thankful for my time in Browning. Next up, I am heading out for Antigua, Guatemala at the end of the month for a period of 4 months. I hope to continue to post a good amount on this page!

The 68th annual North American Indian days on the Blackfeet reservation were quite the experience. The horse relay races at the rodeo, as seen in the video, were a sight to see. During these American Indian days several Powwows were held alongside a number of exciting rodeos. Throughout the entirety of it all was a large market place full of traditional foods and gifts. This was a neat opportunity to be in conversation with some of the shopowners, or those wandering the area. The Blackfeet people are proud to be Blackfeet and proud of their traditions and ways of life. These North American Indian days gave me just a small glimpse of the vast beauty found in the Blackfeet people.

The first half of my summer consisted of mowing lawns for Bozeman Site Services and in my free time enjoying connecting with old and new friends. To me, there is nothing more refreshing than one on one time spent with my good buddies out in God's creation.
