Who is Don Rigoberto Itzep Chanchavac?
He is a Spiritual Guide—Chuchqajau [community spiritual leader and advisor], the founder and director of the organization Takiliben May - Mayan Mission Wajshakib’ B’atz. He has been studying and researching the Mayan Culture for more than 40 years; it is based on the Sacred Oral Traditions, studies on the Sacred and Solar Calendars, his profound studies of the Sacred Book Pop Wuj, his experience of Mayan Spirituality which has allowed him to speak K’iche, his native language, fluently. During the time of his dedication to the culture he has also developed great experience and knowledge in guiding and advising many intellectuals interested in the subject matter. For this reason, he has succeeded in planning on a national and international scale. He recently wrote a book on the history of Momostenango that contains a variety of content on the Values of Our Mayan Culture so that current and future generations might know their values and most importantly, their Cultural Identify. With the fundamental and essential objective of recovering the ancestral values related to ceremonial sites and sacred places that are preserved in Momostenango.
A brief history of Mayan Mission Wajshakib’ B’atz: it’s an organization of Ajq’ijab—spiritual guides that was founded on the day Kajib' / 4 B’atz' in the Mayan calendar, Sunday, September 30th 1984. With its headquarters in Momostenango, Mayan Mission Wajshakib’ B’atz is an Organization of Mayan Spirituality that is concerned with defending and rescuing the practice of Our Mayan Spirituality without mixing in a hodgepodge of other religions. We are strict about speaking the K’iche language. We do everything to respect the principles and content of the Mayan Culture. Our goal and objectives are to generate voices of wisdom in the conscience of future generations.
Its specific objectives and priorities are the studies, teachings and technical trainings on:
K’iche Mayan Culture and its laws based on the sacred book “Pop Wuj”.
Introduction, conference, advice and consultation on the Solar/Agricultural Calendar.
In education with the population in general, the content of Mayan Cosmovision is developing in the consciousness in various generalities such as ceremonial ancestral dances, music, the promotion and practice of knowledge of medicine plants, handicrafts with the participation of young men and women as well as children; we have planned this with the goal of generating these values and principles in the consciousness of the Mayan population of future generations. For this reason, our activity is well-defined and continues working based on the principles of Mayan Culture.
Momostenango is historically a K’iche Mayan town that has preserved and succeeded in maintaining 95% of the use and handling of the Solar and Ceremonial Calendars. Because of this, it is confirmed and proven with historical foundations that Momostenango is the Mecca of K’iche Mayan Spirituality; with their experiences and knowledge of Mayan Spirituality or Cosmovision, the people of Momostenango have preserved the ceremonies in the Ceremonial Sites where the invocation is made with ceremonial offerings to Ahaw [Lord, Creator], Heart of Heaven, Heart of Earth, to nature, to the calendar [day signs] and to the ancestors. They still preserve the solemn celebration of Mayan Calendar holidays such as: Wajshakib’ B’atz, B’elejeb’ B’atz, Wajshakib’ Kej, Ri Mam-Ab’-Solar New Year. These are some examples that we have mentioned as real evidence and historical foundations; this obeys a spiritual, moral, social and cultural necessity for future generations of our K’iche Mayan Millennial Culture.
For this reason, they left the following saying:
Oh sons of ours we leave, but don’t remain alone, don’t forget us, don’t erase us from your hearts, take care of our houses, take care of our families, take care of our mountains, take care of our sacred things and take care of our words.
