🟠International Seminars in Physiology Series

Seminar Announcement

Established in February 2024, our monthly series of scientific seminars with distinguished guest speakers from around the world. In our ninth seminar for the academic year 2025-2026 we are delighted to host Prof. Florian Heigwer from Heidelberg Germany.

Date: April 1st 2026 at 17:00 Greece time
Title: AI-powered deep phenotypic profiling: a versatile tool in genomic, biotechnology and drug discovery
Speaker: Florian Heigwer, Ph.D.
Professor of Synthetic Biotechnology
University of Applied Sciences Bingen
Scientist in Genome Data Science
German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
Heidelberg, Germany

The speaker: Florian Heigwer is a Professor of Synthetic Biotechnology at the University of Applied Sciences Bingen and a Scientist in Genome Data Science at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), with a background in Molecular Biotechnology and a PhD earned with honors at the DKFZ. His research explores how genes, cellular signaling, and the environment interact, integrating AI‑driven analytics with advanced genome engineering. He is internationally recognized for pioneering methods in functional genomics, genetic interaction analysis, high‑content imaging, and CRISPR‑based screening technologies. Among his notable contributions are the development of E‑CRISP, a widely used tool for CRISPR target site identification that helped standardize genome‑editing workflows, and foundational work in microscopy‑based high‑content screening, which advanced computational phenotyping and systems‑level gene function analysis. He also co‑developed key community resources such as GenomeCRISPR, a database for high‑throughput CRISPR/Cas9 screens, and the CRISPR Library Designer (CLD) for multispecies sgRNA library construction, both shaping modern functional genomics research. More recently, he contributed to generating a global genetic interaction map using single‑cell imaging and machine learning, enabling deeper predictive insights into genetic networks in cancer biology. His expertise spans genome engineering, AI‑assisted phenomics, and next‑generation omics technologies, with applications ranging from cancer systems biology to infectious disease mechanisms and biotechnology.

The seminar will be 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes allocated to discussion. To participate in the seminar, you can use the Zoom Meeting link: https://zoom.us/j/99205013857?pwd=SNC8LdnImqysPhHImDT7rSyiLtPRmR.1
