Volos Academy at the 23rd Academic Consultation of Societas Oecumenica in Utrecht
With the participation of its Director, Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis, and its Research Associate, Dr. Nikos Kouremenos, Volos Academy for Theological Studies took part in the 23rd Academic Consultation of “Societas Oecumenica – European Society for Ecumenical Research”, which took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, between August 21 and 25, 2026.
Societas Oecumenica is one of the most important European networks in the field of ecumenical theology and research, bringing together university departments, research and ecclesiastical institutes, as well as theologians from different Christian traditions. This year’s meeting had a special importance due to the choice of Utrecht, a city with a long theological and ecumenical tradition. In addition to being a historical center of Old Catholicism and the seat of the Archbishop of Utrecht, the city has developed a broader and multi-denominational university environment of theological and religious studies. This particular ecclesiastical and academic landscape offered an extremely suitable framework for a European meeting dedicated to ecumenical dialogue.
The general theme of the Consultation was “Churches in the Midst of Polarisation” and focused on the forms and dynamics of polarization both in contemporary European societies and within the Churches themselves. The papers developed around themes such as different forms of social and ecclesiastical polarization, the Church as a site of colonization or decolonization, the dilemma between prophetic advocacy and diplomatic neutrality, issues of gender and human identity, the role of symbols and rituals in reconciliation, and the search for truth in conflict situations. The program also included a public session on democracy and the rule of law in an era of polarization, confirming the strongly public and social character of this year’s meeting.
Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis, one of the invited speakers of the event, participated in the plenary session on Gender and Human Identities as a De/polarising Topic, presenting the paper “The Theology of ‘In-Between’ and the Role of Women in the Orthodox Church: Orthodox Theology Addressing Current Ecclesial Realities.” In his presentation, he approached the position and role of women in the Orthodox Church from the perspective of the theology of ‘interim’, that is, the eschatological tension between the present historical reality and the coming Kingdom of God. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for a critical reexamination of established ecclesiastical practices and gender hierarchies in light of the eschatological and Eucharistic core of Orthodox theology.
Dr. Nikos Kouremenos presented the paper “‘Peace needs truth’: The updated Charta Oecumenica as an ecumenical grammar for depolarization” on the new, revised Charta Oecumenica and its potential to function as a framework for an ecumenical response to contemporary forms of polarization. Through a comparative reading of the original Charta Oecumenica of 2001 and the revised version of 2025, the presentation underlined that peace and reconciliation cannot be separated from truth, justice and responsibility. At the same time, the paper examined the attitude of the Churches towards the political instrumentalisation of religion, propaganda and new forms of polarisation reinforced by the digital environment.
In the context of the General Assembly of the Societas Oecumenica, which took place during the Utrecht Consultation, the new Standing Committee of the Society was also elected. Volos Academy warmly congratulates Dr. Heta Hurskainen (Heta Hurskainen), Associate Professor of Systematic theology, University of Eastern Finland in Joensu, on her election as President of Societas Oecumenica, and Dr. Dimitrios Keramidas (Dimitrios Keramidas), Professor of Ecumenical and Orthodox Theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, on his election to the position of Secretary of the Societas Oecumenica, and wishes to them and to the new Board a fruitful and successful term.

Η Ακαδημία Θεολογικών Σπουδών Βόλου στην 23η Ακαδημαϊκή Συνάντηση της Societas Oecumenica στην Ουτρέχτη
Με τη συμμετοχή του Διευθυντή της, Παντελή Καλαϊτζίδη, και του Ερευνητικού Συνεργάτη της, Νίκου Κουρεμένου, η Ακαδημία Θεολογικών Σπουδών Βόλου έλαβε μέρος στην 23η Ακαδημαϊκή Συνάντηση (Academic Consultation) της Societas Oecumenica – European Society for Ecumenical Research, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Ουτρέχτη της Ολλανδίας από τις 21 έως τις 25 Αυγούστου 2026.
Η Societas Oecumenica αποτελεί ένα από τα σημαντικότερα ευρωπαϊκά δίκτυα στον χώρο της οικουμενικής θεολογίας και έρευνας, φέρνοντας σε επαφή πανεπιστημιακά τμήματα, ερευνητικά και εκκλησιαστικά ινστιτούτα, καθώς και θεολόγους από διαφορετικές χριστιανικές παραδόσεις. Ιδιαίτερο συμβολικό βάρος είχε η φετινή συνάντηση λόγω της επιλογής της Ουτρέχτης, πολής με μακρά θεολογική και οικουμενική παράδοση. Εκτός από ιστορικό κέντρο του Παλαιοκαθολικισμού και έδρα του Αρχιεπισκόπου Ουτρέχτης, η πόλη έχει αναπτύξει ένα ευρύτερο και πολυ-ομολογιακό πανεπιστημιακό περιβάλλον θεολογικών και θρησκειολογικών σπουδών. Το ιδιαίτερο αυτό εκκλησιαστικό και ακαδημαϊκό τοπίο προσέφερε ένα εξαιρετικά πρόσφορο πλαίσιο για μια ευρωπαϊκή συνάντηση αφιερωμένη στον οικουμενικό διάλογο.
Η φετινή συνάντηση είχε ως γενικό θέμα “Churches in the Midst of Polarisation” («Οι Εκκλησίες εν μέσω πόλωσης») και επικεντρώθηκε στις μορφές και τις δυναμικές της πόλωσης τόσο στις σύγχρονες ευρωπαϊκές κοινωνίες όσο και στο εσωτερικό των ίδιων των Εκκλησιών. Οι εργασίες αναπτύχθηκαν γύρω από θεματικές όπως οι διαφορετικές μορφές κοινωνικής και εκκλησιαστικής πόλωσης, η Εκκλησία ως χώρος αποικιοποίησης ή αποαποικιοποίησης, το δίλημμα μεταξύ προφητικής συνηγορίας και διπλωματικής ουδετερότητας, τα ζητήματα φύλου και ανθρώπινης ταυτότητας, ο ρόλος των συμβόλων και των τελετουργιών στη συμφιλίωση, καθώς και η αναζήτηση της αλήθειας σε συνθήκες σύγκρουσης. Το πρόγραμμα περιλάμβανε ακόμη δημόσια συνεδρία με θέμα τη δημοκρατία και το κράτος δικαίου σε εποχή πόλωσης, επιβεβαιώνοντας τον έντονα δημόσιο και κοινωνικό χαρακτήρα της φετινής συνάντησης.
Ο Παντελής Καλαϊτζίδης, ένας από τους προσκεκλημένους ομιλητές της συνάντησης, συμμετείχε στην ολομέλεια με θέμα Gender and Human Identities as a De/polarising Topic, παρουσιάζοντας την ανακοίνωση “The Theology of ‘In-Between’ and the Role of Women in the Orthodox Church: Orthodox Theology Addressing Current Ecclesial Realities.” Στην εισήγησή του προσέγγισε τη θέση και τον ρόλο των γυναικών στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία υπό το πρίσμα της θεολογίας του "αναμεταξύ”, δηλαδή της εσχατολογικής έντασης ανάμεσα στην παρούσα ιστορική πραγματικότητα και την ερχόμενη Βασιλεία. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στην ανάγκη κριτικής επανεξέτασης παγιωμένων εκκλησιαστικών πρακτικών και έμφυλων ιεραρχήσεων υπό το φως του εσχατολογικού και ευχαριστιακού πυρήνα της ορθόδοξης θεολογίας.
Ο Νίκος Κουρεμένος παρουσίασε την ανακοίνωση “‘Peace needs truth’: The updated Charta Oecumenica as an ecumenical grammar for depolarization.” με αντικείμενο τη νέα, αναθεωρημένη Charta Oecumenica και τη δυνατότητά της να λειτουργήσει ως πλαίσιο οικουμενικής αντιμετώπισης των σύγχρονων μορφών πόλωσης. Μέσα από τη συγκριτική ανάγνωση της αρχικής Charta Oecumenica του 2001 και της αναθεωρημένης εκδοχής του 2025, η εισήγηση υπογράμμισε ότι η ειρήνη και η συμφιλίωση δεν μπορούν να αποσυνδεθούν από την αλήθεια, τη δικαιοσύνη και την ευθύνη. Παράλληλα, εξετάστηκε η στάση των Εκκλησιών απέναντι στην πολιτική εργαλειοποίηση της θρησκείας, την προπαγάνδα και τις νέες μορφές πόλωσης που ενισχύονται από το ψηφιακό περιβάλλον.
Στο πλαίσιο της Γενικής Συνέλευσης της Societas Oecumenica, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης της Ουτρέχτης, εξελέγη και το νέο Δ.Σ. της Εταιρείας. Η Ακαδημία Θεολογικών Σπουδών Βόλου συγχαίρει θερμά την Dr. Heta Hurskainen, Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Συστηματικής Θεολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Ανατολικής Φινλανδίας (Γιόενσου, Φινλανδία) για την εκλογή της ως προέδρου της Societas Oecumenica, και επίσης τον Δρ. Δημήτρη Κεραμιδά, Καθηγητή Οικουμενικής και Ορθόδοξης Θεολογίας στο Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) της Ρώμης, για την εκλογή του ως Γραμματέα της Societas Oecumenica, και εύχεται και στους δυο, καθώς και σε όλο το νέο συμβούλιο, ευδόκιμη και επιτυχημένη θητεία.
