Tallinn University had the honour and pleasure of hosting representatives from our LocalLing partner, the Universidad de Caldas, Colombia: Vice-Rector for Research and Postgraduate Studies Hector Fabio Torres Cardona and Professor Milton Rosero Moreano.

Our colleagues Iris Orosia Campos Bandrés and Daniel Laliena Cantero from the University of Zaragoza recently completed a secondment at the University of Thessaly, where they worked together with partners across the LocalLing consortium on collaborative research and scientific publishing.

Among the main outcomes was the completion and submission of the University of Zaragoza's chapter for the forthcoming LocalLing monograph, Global Perspectives on Local & Heritage Languages: Policies, Practices & Linguistic Justice. The chapter explores the linguistic situation in Spain, with a particular focus on the Aragonese language.

The secondment also helped advance a second collaborative publication on Aragonese children's and young adult literature, strengthened scientific exchange on language policy, multilingualism and language revitalisation and laid the groundwork for future researcher exchanges and collaborative research projects.

A big thank you to University of Thessaly, Achilleas Kostoulas and Eleni Motsiou for hosting this secondment, and congratulations to Iris Orosia Campos Bandrés and Daniel Laliena Cantero on these excellent outcomes!

🎉 The final day of our LocalLing academic programme celebrated linguistic diversity, intercultural dialogue and the growing collaboration between researchers from Morocco and Tunisia.

The programme featured two inspiring contributions from members of the LocalLing community. Nadia Bouchhioua (University of Manouba) presented her research on the intonation patterns of the endangered Shilha Berber variety in Tunisia, highlighting the importance of documenting endangered languages and safeguarding linguistic heritage. Oumaima Elghazali (ITQAN Foundation) led an interactive workshop on interculturality, encouraging participants to reflect on how education, research and community engagement can foster meaningful dialogue across multicultural societies.

As the three-day programme concluded, participants reflected on the shared challenges and opportunities for cooperation in multilingualism, heritage language preservation and intercultural research.

📚 Day 2 of our LocalLing academic programme focused on the connections between research, fieldwork and community engagement in multilingual contexts.

A highlight of the day was the interactive session led by Yamina EL Kirat (ITQAN Foundation), who shared valuable insights into the realities of conducting Amazigh language research. Drawing on her extensive fieldwork experience, she explored the importance of building trust with communities and reflected on the practical challenges and lessons that often remain behind the scenes of academic publications.

Participants also explored the rich linguistic interactions between Tunisian Arabic, Amazigh and French through Amira Ben Hassan's presentation and learned about community-led efforts to preserve Amazigh language and culture in Tunisia from Nesrine Ben Moussa of the TAMAGUIT Association.

The discussions reinforced the importance of international collaboration in advancing research, supporting linguistic diversity, and preserving cultural heritage.

📚 Day 1 Recap

Our three-day academic program began with an inspiring first day of learning, dialogue and collaboration, bringing together researchers and educators from Morocco and Tunisia.

Participants explored a range of topics, including North African identities, multilingualism, heritage languages, English language acquisition, and Amazigh language research. Through engaging presentations and thoughtful discussions, the sessions highlighted the importance of linguistic diversity, intercultural dialogue and international academic cooperation.

We are grateful to all our speakers and participants for making this first day such a success, and we look forward to continuing these enriching conversations over the coming days.

🌍 Exciting news from LocalLing!

Professor Nadia Bouchhioua has arrived in Morocco ahead of our upcoming programme of lectures, workshops, and research discussions taking place from 9–11 July.

Hosted by Itqan Foundation, this three-day event will bring together researchers, educators, students, and practitioners from Morocco and Tunisia to explore topics including multilingualism, heritage languages, Amazigh language research, language acquisition, identity, and interculturality.

A special thank you to our LocalLing colleagues and hosts, Dr. Yamina EL Kirat, Dr. Oumaima Elghazali, and Dr. Yassine Boussagui, as well as the ITQAN Foundation team, for making this event possible.

We are seeking contributions on topics such as language revitalisation, youth engagement, multilingualism, digital spaces, and innovative approaches to teaching and sustaining local and heritage languages.
