The Wireless and Mobile Communications Lab (WMCLab) announces the publication of "𝐑𝐅-𝐄𝐌𝐅 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝟓𝐆: 𝐀 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐞" in the journal 𝐸𝑛𝑣𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 by Springer Nature.
The research provides a comprehensive assessment of RF-EMF exposure during the transition to 5G network rollout. By combining short-term ground measurements with 32 weeks of continuous monitoring across the Peloponnese Region, and following two rounds of rigorous peer review, the work establishes a scientific baseline for understanding how evolving wireless infrastructures influence the electromagnetic environment.
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬:
🔹𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: All measured electric field values remained well within the stringent Greek safety limits.
🔹𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟓𝐆 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭: During this early deployment phase, 5G contributed only 3% to the total exposure, while mature 4G networks remain the dominant source at 53%.
🔹𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬: Within the measured environment, cellular downlink transmissions—specifically legacy 2G and mature 4G systems—accounted for the vast majority of human exposure, while the impact of other sources such as Wi-Fi or broadcasting remains low in comparison.
🔹𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬: Continuous monitoring identified clear peak exposure windows between 15:00 and 21:00, correlating with daily human activity and network load.
