🏛️ Γιατί όμως χρησιμοποιούσαν κεραμικά οι αρχαίοι; Πώς τα κατασκεύαζαν; Ποια η σύνδεση με το σήμερα και ποιος ο ρόλος της γλώσσας σε όλα αυτά;

🤡 In Greece, Carnival is not merely a season of revelry. With deep roots in antiquity, Apokries is linked to the way people once honored the ancient god Dionysus and, more broadly, how they understood the world around them. It is memory, sound, and tradition. It is the streets filling with footsteps, the narrow alleys echoing with laughter and playful teasing, souls coming together around age-old customs, cultures meeting and mingling.
🎺 Masks, animal skins, and rhythmically ringing bells pour into the alleyways, satirize current events and every kind of wrongdoing, praise nature, ward off evil, and welcome the spring. It is the moment when past and present dance together. It is the living history of every place, kept vibrantly alive.

📌 Τι σημαίνει η έκφραση "άνοιξε το Τριώδιο που ακούμε από την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα;
🤡 The phrase “the Triodion has opened” is commonly used metaphorically to mark the beginning of the Carnival season and the time of celebration and revelry that precedes Great Lent. For the Orthodox Church, however, the phrase is literal, as the Triodion is the liturgical book that begins to be read ten weeks before Easter, signaling the start of a period of spiritual preparation leading to Lent and the Resurrection.
👺 The terms “Apokries” and “Carnival” are closely linked to the ideas of indulgence and abstinence before fasting. Apokries comes from the Greek expression meaning “away from meat” and refers to the gradual withdrawal from meat consumption in anticipation of Lent, while Carnival is thought to derive from the Latin carne vale, meaning “farewell to meat.”
👹 The origins of Carnival in ancient Greece can be traced back to the Dionysian festivals, such as the Anthesteria and the Great Dionysia. These celebrations were characterized by masquerades, processions, music, dance, and a powerful sense of freedom, honoring Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, and the renewal of nature.
⛪ As Christianity spread, it did not entirely erase earlier religious practices but instead absorbed and reshaped certain elements of them. In doing so, it preserved the timing and some customs of pagan celebrations, reinterpreting them within the Christian tradition as a transitional period leading into fasting, reflection, and spiritual purification.
📷 It is 1961, and Thessaloniki is celebrating Carnival with the vibrancy and brilliance that define the city. On February 19 of that year, the newspaper Makedonia documents the preparations for the grand carnival festivities. The material comes from an article published in Exostis, offering a snapshot of a city alive with anticipation, color, and collective celebration.

✨ Thessaloniki was always a multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual city with a lot of customs, religions, and recipes. For centuries, people from all over the world used to live one next to the other sharing traditions and a lot of flavours. Many of these multicultural flavours and products still survive today.
📍 What can we discover with a walk in the city center?
📍 What is hidden in the old markets?
📍What flavours can we try?
📍What do these flavours tell us about the history of the city?
🛒🥬 We are walking through the old traditional markets of Thessaloniki, among the narrow alleys of its center, where even today people do their shopping and we discover incredible stories that reflect its multicultural past.
💬🧑🦳 We are communicating with locals, listening to their personal stories that are lost in the depths of the centuries and discussing with them about the eating habits of the old inhabitants of Thessaloniki, the special products of their recipes and their importance for each culture. We are tasting a lot of flavours, pieces of the history that is revealed alive in front of our eyes. We are getting to know herbs, spices, vegetables, meats, fish, sweets, drinks and a lot of fascinating narrations.
🥘☕ We are exploring the gastronomic wealth of our city. We are learning how to use the necessary vocabulary as we come into contact with grammar and syntax issues. We learn Greek our way!

📚 By learning the language and culture of a place, and by discovering its nature and people, we inevitably also come closer to understanding its needs and the serious issues it faces.
🧳 Through our travels and summer schools, we experience Greece as it truly is and for us, this is an important part of our work. Now that summer and the tourist season are slowly coming to an end, it’s the right moment to share some information that is often left in the shadows.
🌞 Summer in Greece is always magical, especially on our beautiful islands. But as we look back, it’s worth remembering that tourism, while vital, also brings challenges. Behind the record numbers and new resorts, many workers face difficult conditions, small communities struggle with housing and resources, and the natural environment feels the pressure.
👩🍳 In a few words, workers in the sector often face exhausting hours, low pay, and poor conditions, leading many young people to abandon these jobs after just a season or two.
🏝 Local communities see housing costs rise, beaches and infrastructure overloaded, and precious resources—like water—stretched thin.
🚢 Despite state subsidies, travel costs for ferries and holidays have soared, making it harder for many Greeks to enjoy even a simple summer break.
💙 Tourism can be a real source of prosperity and joy for locals and visitors alike but only if it grows with care, planning, respect, and limits—so that it supports both people and nature. Let’s keep this in mind, so that Greek summers remain special for everyone.
✨ At Peek at Greek we don’t just learn the language, history, and culture. We also listen to the pulse of today and its connection with yesterday. We create a community of people who stay informed and who care! Come and join us!

✨ This summer in our Summer School in Zagori we immersed ourselves not only in the Greek language, but also in the living traditions of Epirus.
🧶 We followed the journey of wool — from raw fleece to thread — and discovered how the loom has been at the heart of household life for centuries. We learned about weaving as both an art and a story, woven with patience, rhythm, and meaning.
🐑 We also explored the ancient art of felt-making: how raw fibers are transformed with water, movement, and hands into something strong, warm, and beautiful. And of course, we made our own creations — carrying a piece of tradition into the present.
💬 For us, learning Greek is not just about words. It’s about touching culture, connecting with history, and experiencing everyday life through the crafts that shaped it.
💜 A big thank you to our wonderful colleagues who made this unique experience possible. Rokka Guest House
