Amazing time attending (and this time moderating) the 2nd Annual Human Rights Forum in Solun organized by . I’m delighted to see that Aegean Macedonia is in the midst of a Macedonian Renaissance right now—the villages, the people, the music all confirmed it. However, there is a lot of work ahead of us. While the Macedonian language can be heard in song once more, it’s still not recognized. While many young people I spoke to openly acknowledge they know little ντόπια/μακεδονικα from their grandparents, they still don’t speak it fully.

We need to start investing openly in bridging the gap between ourselves and our brothers and sisters in Aegean Macedonia—everything from education, cultural exchange trips, language programs are the key.

I am thoroughly convinced what is happening in Aegean Macedonia is the road to asserting what we are, and just as importantly what we are not.

Let’s get to work.

📌 Today we are going to read the controversial article in its entirety and show you how the media machine actively works to distort narratives, omit facts, and most importantly, WHY they are doing it.

‼️ What we get wrong about the identity:

📍Brailsford was an English journalist and writer traveling through the in the early 1900s amidst the wreckage of the Ilinden uprising.

📖 His observations on the history, psychology, & motives of the Macedonian people in their fight for independence are a priceless research tool for modern researchers.

He noted how poorly developed the national consciousness was of the average Macedonian, and to what degree identities arose from religious and political factors.

Despite all this, he still classified the Macedonians as inherently a separate people and with separate interests. He didn't arrive at this conclusion because he saw a sea of an ethnic-Macedonian identity. He saw this to be true, because he saw that the people's passionate struggle for statehood, fervent and patriotic identification with the land and its heroes WAS IN ITSELF a form of national identity, even if it was not fully crystallized to the level of ethnic consciousness yet.

So if are starting point in studying the past is finding those with a carbon-copy Macedonian conscious like we have today, we won't get very far. Instead, let us break free from modern convention and terminology and see the past for what it is, and not what we want it to be.

Then we will see an undying love of Macedonia, and a certain 'Macedonianess' radiating throughout.

Krste Petkov Misirkov (November 18, 1874 - July 26, 1926) was born on this day in Pella (Postol), Aegean Macedonia 🇲🇰

📌 He was a Macedonian philologist who became a pioneer in the codification of the Macedonian literary language. In addition, he was an accomplished Slavist, historian, ethnographer, political analyst, publicist, and a researcher of Macedonian folk art.

📖 In his seminal work “On the Macedonian Matters", he not only makes the case for a separate Macedonian identity, but he also does a thorough political analysis on the reasons for the failure of Ilinden, how to best achieve reforms in Macedonia, and how foreign propaganda from neighboring countries hinders Macedonia's progress.

🗣️"I am a Macedonian and this is how I see the position of my country: it is not Russia or Austria-Hungary that are the enemies of Macedonia, but Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. Our country can be saved from ruin only by struggling fiercely against these states"
