THE DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN
AUGUST 15
On August 15, one of the most deeply rooted religious and cultural celebrations in Greece, painting and poetry meet through two defining voices of modern Greek culture.
Konstantinos Parthenis, one of the seminal figures of modern Greek painting, approached religious imagery through a deeply personal visual language of spirituality, symbolism and light.
Alongside his The Virgin and Child (1935), from the National Gallery in Athens, we chose verses from Axion Esti by Odysseas Elytis, one of the great voices of modern Greek poetry and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979.
A meeting of image and word, of painting and poetry, and a tribute to the enduring presence of the Virgin in Greek art and collective memory.
