🌍 What does the ground beneath our feet have to do with tourism? 

Quite a lot. 

Today is International Geodiversity Day, recognised by UNESCO, and this year’s theme – “Geodiversity on Our Doorstep” – invites us to look more closely at the landscapes, soils, rocks and geological features that shape the places we live in and visit. 🪨🌱 

For tourism, these are more than a backdrop. They contribute to a destination’s identity, support ecosystems and local livelihoods, and often form an essential part of what makes a place worth experiencing. 

A regenerative approach to tourism therefore also means learning to value and protect the natural foundations of a destination and helping visitors understand why they matter. 

For us in the Seeds & Skills project, this also raises an important question: 

What knowledge and skills do future tourism professionals need to turn appreciation of place into responsible action? 

Perhaps regeneration really does start on our doorstep. ✨

🌱 Can AI help tourism leave places better than it found them? 

For regenerative tourism, the potential is considerable. 
But technology alone will not make tourism regenerative.
That is why skills matter. 

Through the Erasmus+ SEEDs & SKILLS – Nurturing Skills to Heal Tourism Places project, we are looking at the skills tourism professionals need to move from sustainability ambitions to regenerative practice.

We're excited to share our latest study: "Secondary-School Students' Evaluation of AR/VR Applications in School STEM Education"

The research explores how secondary students from four European countries evaluated AR/VR applications developed within the STEM-IT project — looking at usability, pedagogical value, engagement, and whether they'd want to use these tools again.

What students told us: • 70.4% reported high interest and enjoyment • 68.7% positively evaluated the clarity and usefulness of the content • 66.1% found the applications easy to use • 73% said they'd use similar AR/VR applications again and recommend them to other students

The strongest driver? Pedagogical clarity and usefulness — combined with active participation and usability. The takeaway: immersion alone isn't enough. Technology becomes meaningful for learning when it's clear, usable, engaging, and well integrated into the pedagogy.

Η πρόληψη της βίας στις συντροφικές σχέσεις των εφήβων ξεκινά πριν προκληθεί οποιαδήποτε βλάβη. Ξεκινά βοηθώντας τους νέους να αναγνωρίζουν επιβλαβείς συμπεριφορές, να αμφισβητούν στερεότυπα και να δημιουργούν σχέσεις βασισμένες στον σεβασμό, την ισότητα και την ενσυναίσθηση.

Η νέα σειρά σύντομων βίντεο του Act4Love προσφέρει στους εκπαιδευτικούς τεκμηριωμένες πληροφορίες, ερωτήματα προβληματισμού και πρακτικές ιδέες για θέματα όπως η συναισθηματική εκπαίδευση, η συναίνεση, η έμφυλη κοινωνικοποίηση, η αναγνώριση ενδείξεων κακοποίησης και η έγκαιρη υποστήριξη των εφήβων.

Some places are irreplaceable. We are treating them like they are not.

The old town of Dubrovnik. The canals of Venice. The white villages of Santorini. The historic centre of Prague.

These are not just beautiful places. They are living records of human civilisation — centuries of craft, culture, memory and meaning, accumulated layer by layer, generation by generation.

And right now, they are being loved to death.

Overtourism does not arrive dramatically. It arrives quietly — one extra visitor at a time, one more short-term rental, one more tour bus, one more photo taken from the same spot. Until one day the residents are gone, the local shops have become souvenir stalls, and what remains is a stage set of a place rather than a place itself.

But the answer is not to stop travelling.

It is to travel differently. And more importantly — it is to design tourism differently.

Regenerative tourism starts from the principle that the places we visit are not backdrops. They are living ecosystems — social, cultural and ecological — with their own rhythms, their own limits, and their own needs.

Designing tourism that protects and actively restores these places means:

- Understanding the carrying capacity of a destination before designing experiences within it. Involving local communities in every decision about how their home is shared with visitors.

- Creating economic models that keep tourism revenue in the local economy rather than extracting it. Building experiences that connect visitors to the living culture of a place — not a performance of it.

This is what regenerative tourism professionals need to know how to do. Not just how to sell a destination — but how to steward it.

Biodiversity is not a backdrop. It's the foundation.

A coral reef that took 10,000 years to build can be destroyed in a single season of mass tourism.

A meadow that supports 200 species of insects can be reduced to a monoculture in a decade of unchecked development.

A forest that has filtered water, stored carbon and sheltered wildlife for centuries can be cleared to make way for a hotel in weeks.

We have spent generations treating biodiversity as scenery — something beautiful to visit, to photograph, to sell as a destination experience. We have rarely asked what it costs the living world to be consumed this way.

Regenerative tourism starts from a different premise.

Biodiversity is not a resource to be exploited. It is the ecological infrastructure on which all human wellbeing — including the tourism economy itself — ultimately depends. Destinations that lose their biodiversity lose the very thing that makes them worth visiting.

This means that protecting and actively restoring biodiversity must become a core competence of the tourism workforce — not a niche specialism for ecotourism guides, but a fundamental literacy for hotel managers, tour operators, destination planners and experience designers alike.

What does that look like in practice?

It looks like a tour operator in Navarra designing an itinerary where visitors install nesting boxes for birds and restore native meadow plants — leaving the landscape more biodiverse than they found it.

It looks like a hotel in Austria sourcing food from local agroecological suppliers who maintain the genetic diversity of traditional crop varieties.

It looks like a destination manager in Greece monitoring the carrying capacity of a protected coastal ecosystem and actively limiting visitor numbers to protect breeding seabird colonies.

These are not marginal examples. They are the blueprint for a tourism industry that earns its place in the landscapes it inhabits.

We've spent decades telling tourists to "travel responsibly."

Leave no trace. Offset your carbon. Choose eco-certified hotels.
And yet — coral reefs are bleaching. Overtourism is hollowing out city centres. Local communities are being priced out of their own neighbourhoods.
Maybe the problem isn't how we travel. Maybe it's what we expect tourism to do.

Regenerative tourism starts from a different question: not "how do we cause less harm?" but "how do we actively make things better?"
It means designing tourism experiences that restore ecosystems. That build local economic resilience. That give communities agency over their own territories.

This is the transformation that SEEDS & SKILLS is working towards — developing the competences that tourism professionals across Europe need to make regenerative tourism a reality.
Because sustainability was never the destination. It was just the starting point. 🌿
