«Θα σας διηγηθώ και ένα περιστατικό. Οι στρατιώτες αποβιβάσθηκαν στον Μονόλιθο. Άρχισαν να ανηφορίζουν στα Φηρά, όταν άκουσαν μια ομοβροντία και είδαν καπνούς στον ορίζοντα. Φοβήθηκαν πολύ και το έβαλαν στα πόδια επιστρέφοντας στο Μονόλιθο. «Τι συμβαίνει βρε παιδιά, έχουμε αντίσταση;» Ναι τους λένε «το ηφαίστειο δεν χάρηκε με την άφιξη σας». Το ηφαίστειο ήταν εν ενεργεία από τον Αύγουστο του 1939. Η δραστηριότητα διήρκησε μέχρι τον Ιούλιο του 1941»

«I’m going to tell you a story from WWII. The soldiers disembarked at Monolithos. As they made their way up to Fira, they heard a barrage of sound and smoke on the horizon. They were really frightened and returned to Monolithos. “What is going on? Is there a resistance force on the island?” They received a positive response: “Yes, the volcano is not happy about your arrival”. The volcano of Santorini was active from August 1939. The specific volcanic activity lasted until July 1941.

Παρέλαση παλαιών πολεμιστών Θήρας την 25η Μαρτίου 1938 στα Φηρά Σαντορίνης. Ανεκτίμητη φωτογραφία του Γεώργιου Ιωακειμίδη (Συλλογή Εμμανουήλ Λιγνού). Οι Θηραίοι πολεμιστές έλαβαν μέρος στον Α’ και Β’ Βαλκανικό πόλεμο, τον Α’ Παγκόσμιο πόλεμο και την Μικρασιατική εκστρατεία. Μένουμε σπίτι και τους τιμούμε σήμερα και κάθε μέρα.

Parade on the 25th of March 1938 by Theran Warriors at the capital of Santorini, Fira. The incredible photograph was taken by Georgios Ioakimides (Emannouil Lignos Collection). The Theran soldiers took part in the 1st and 2nd Balkan Wars, World War I and the Greek-Turkish War (Asia Minor Campaign). We honor them today by staying safe and staying home on this special day.
