💧 Do you know where the word "νερό" /nero/ (water) comes from?

Most people believe that "νερό" comes from the ancient word "hydor" (ὕδωρ). And yet, the story is even more interesting!

During Byzantine times, people often said "νεαρόν ύδωρ" (nearon hydor) meaning fresh, clean water.

Over time, the noun "ύδωρ" was omitted, and only the adjective "νεαρόν" remained.

Thus, the word evolved: νεαρόν ύδωρ → νεαρόν → νερό.

💡 Ancient "ύδωρ" did not disappear.
It still lives on in dozens of words we use every day:

🌊 υδροδότηση (water supply)
💧 υδάτινος (aqueous / water-related)
🌍 υδροφόρος ορίζοντας water table / aquifer)

📚 Language is a living journey: sometimes a whole word gets lost and an adjective takes its place!
