GeoSat Research Lab participated in the 2nd and 3rd Collaborative Rooms, an initiative of the Region of Crete’s Innovative Business Observatory that connects research laboratories with businesses to exchange expertise and develop new collaborations.

The 2nd Collaborative Room, dedicated to Blue Growth, was held on 23 March 2026 at the Training and Technical Schools of the Heraklion Chamber. The Lab contributed to the thematic session on Blue Tourism and Coastal Protection. The discussion addressed coastal-zone management, marine and coastal data collection, underwater cultural heritage and the development of satellite-based monitoring systems for protecting coastal and marine ecosystems.

The 3rd Collaborative Room, focusing on Artificial Intelligence, was organized during the international technology exhibition BEYOND 2026 at Metropolitan Expo in Athens. GeoSat Research Lab participated in the working group on AI, Sustainable Development and ESG, contributing its expertise in satellite remote sensing and geospatial technologies to discussions on environmental monitoring, risk prediction, critical infrastructure observation, and data-driven decision support. Potential collaborations included integrated solutions combining geospatial technologies, satellite data and digital applications for monitoring infrastructure and environmental parameters.

These activities strengthen the connection between research and industry and highlight the role of Earth observation and geospatial innovation in addressing environmental and societal challenges.

🌍 Presenting our latest research at ISPRS Congress 2026 – Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦

🌊🇨🇦We are delighted to share that Dr. Nasos Argyriou and Dr. Nikos Papadopoulos participated in the ISPRS Congress 2026 (4–11 July 2026, Toronto, Canada), presenting our work during the WG III/1J: Remote Sensing Data Processing and Understanding session.

📌 Presentation Title:
Integrated Geoinformatics for Reconstructing the Cultural Dynamics in Coastal and Shallow Submerged Sites

Our research introduces an integrated geoinformatics framework for investigating and monitoring archaeological landscapes located at the dynamic interface between land and sea. By combining Earth Observation, GIS, UAV and shallow-water photogrammetry, marine geophysics, satellite-derived bathymetry, coastal vulnerability assessment and spatial risk analysis, we demonstrate how advanced geospatial technologies can enhance the documentation, interpretation, preservation, and digital dissemination of vulnerable coastal cultural heritage.

The research highlights the growing role of integrated geoinformatics in supporting sustainable cultural heritage management and providing scalable solutions for documenting and safeguarding endangered coastal and shallow submerged archaeological landscapes.

Many thanks to the organizers of ISPRS Congress 2026 for bringing together the international remote sensing and photogrammetry community and providing an excellent platform for scientific exchange.

🌍 GeoSAT Summer Training Programme 2026 | IMS-FORTH

The Geosat Research Group of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies - FORTH successfully hosted a summer training programme in GIS, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and GPS/GNSS for 27 Italian students, aged 16–17, during 8th–26th June 2026.

The activity took place within the framework of an Erasmus+ Vocational Educations and Training (VET) mobility programme, coordinated by EduNexHub Learning Institute, and introduced students to the core principles and practical workflows of geospatial science through a project-based learning approach for environmental and cultural heritage applications.

During the programme, students worked on real geospatial tasks,
including:
🛰️ exploring satellite imagery and Earth Observation data
🗺️ learning maps, coordinates, projections and QGIS workflows
🌱 calculating vegetation indices
📍 collecting GPS/GNSS field data and importing them into GIS
🏛️ applying photogrammetry and Structure-from-Motion techniques for 3D
modelling
🧭 performing spatial analysis, digitising, buffering, raster clipping
and map layout design
🎓 presenting their final team projects, including island maps, thematic layers, GPS outputs and 3D models

The training was delivered by Dr. Nasos Argyriou and Christos Zervoudakis from the IMS-FORTH (GeoSat ReSeArch Lab), combining short tutorial-style introductions with independent project-based work and fieldwork.

We are very happy to have hosted this enthusiastic group of students and to contribute to experiential, cross-border learning in geospatial science, digital skills and environmental observation. Special thanks to EduNexHub Learning Institute for the coordination of this Erasmus+ training activity at IMS-FORTH.

🌍 GeoSAT Summer Training Programme 2026 | IMS-FORTH

Το Geosat Research Group του Institute for Mediterranean Studies - FORTH
