Educational Trip to New York | Day #1

As part of a joint educational visit with the M.Sc. in Marine Science & Technology Management and the Department of Maritime Studies Τμήμα Ναυτιλιακών Σπουδών Πανεπιστήμιο Πειραιώς-, our students attended the 20th Annual Capital Link International Shipping Forum (March 9, 2026), one of the leading global gatherings of maritime stakeholders.

The Forum offered a valuable opportunity to engage directly with investors, shipowners, financiers, policymakers and senior industry professionals, reflecting our commitment to combining rigorous academic training with meaningful exposure to real-world decision-making.

Discussions on sustainable shipping were central, highlighting the interplay between risk–return considerations and long-term development priorities. Participation in such forums allows students to gain first-hand insight into the challenges shaping the future of the sustainable blue economy.

We are grateful to Capital Linkfor their warm hospitality and for hosting such an impactful platform for policy-oriented discussion.

Last Monday, October 6 2025, we hosted the Welcome Ceremony for our incoming students of the 2025-2026 academic year. The Ceremony took place at the Ceremony Hall of the University of Piraeus - Πανεπιστήμιο Πειραιώςof Piraeus.
Welcome addresses were delivered by the Director of the MSc Programme Professor Andreas Andrikopoulos, the Head of the Department of Maritime Studies-University of Piraeus of Maritime Studies - University of Piraeus Professor IoannisTheotokas, Professor Emeritus Vasileios Tselentis, Professor Maria BOILE, Assistant Professor Stefanos Chatzinikolaou and Assistant Professor Anastasia Christodoulou.
Furthermore, the Welcome Ceremony included a panel discussion titled "Sustainable shipping: Key challenges and the road ahead" with the Environmental Engineer, Sustainability Consultant and Auditor Dr Spyridoula Maltezou, Dimitra Louizou of Wärtsilä and Epameinondas Chandros of Grant Thornton Greece. The discussion was moderated by Assistant Professor Anastasia Christodoulou and highlighted the challenges facing the shipping industry in the domain of sustainability with respect to technology, policy design, reporting practices and the role of university education.

On April 30, 2025, Ass. Professor Stefanos Chatzinikolaou, instructor in the MSc Sustainable Blue Economy, moderated the roundtable discussion during the Isalos.net event "MEPC 83: The new framework for shipping decarbonization", held at the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.

The event, following the recent MEPC 83 decisions in London, brought together key experts from the maritime sector to discuss the IMO’s newly adopted mid-term measures for reducing GHG emissions from commercial vessels. A timely and dynamic exchange of views on practical challenges, regulatory impacts, and the future of sustainable shipping.

"Βισωσιμότητα και ναυτιλία, μια σχέση αμοιβαίου προσδιορισμού", Ναυτεμπορική

"Μια βασική πρόκληση στη μετάβαση της ναυτιλίας προς ένα πιο βιώσιμο αύριο είναι ο μετασχηματισμός των γνώσεων και των δεξιοτήτων των εργαζομένων στη ναυτιλία, με τρόπο ώστε να υποστηρίζεται η στρατηγική προτεραιότητα της βιωσιμότητας στη ναυτιλία και παράλληλα να αναβαθμίζεται η παραγωγικότητα των εργαζομένων. Σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση είναι σημαντική η επιστημονική κατάρτιση των εργαζομένων στις επιχειρήσεις και τους οργανισμούς της ναυτιλίας, με έμφαση στο τεχνολογικό, περιβαλλοντικό, πολιτικό και οικονομικό πρόσημο της βιωσιμότητας ως προτεραιότητας της ναυτιλίας. Σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση, το Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών MSc Sustainable Blue Economy του Τμήματος Ναυτιλιακών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς αποτελεί ένα ουσιώδες, πρωτοπόρο και καταξιωμένο ακαδημαϊκό εγχείρημα για όσους επιθυμούν να σταδιοδρομήσουν τόσο στο χώρο της βιωσιμότητας όσο και στο χώρο της ναυτιλίας και ευρύτερα της γαλάζιας οικονομίας. Η επιστημονική γνώση είναι κύτταρο αλλαγής και η αλλαγή είναι η μόνη μας επιλογή για τη βιωσιμότητα.
