📍Last January 30th, the University of Maia in collaboration with Agrupamento de Escolas do Freixo carried out the University of Maia's Multiplier Event of the GameWork project at the Agrupamento de Escolas Frei João de Vila do Conde, Portugal.

Students and teachers from three classes of the 7th grade had the opportunity to learn about the GameWork project and experience the digital environment with some Physics-Chemistry homework tasks. ☄️🌍✨

The overall feedback was very positive, with students and teachers showing great interest and enthusiasm regarding the GameWork environment, and acknowledging its usefulness, enjoyment, and usability. 😉

Conference "Digital gamification in the classroom. Theory and Practice", held on 29th of January 2024, attracted more than 50 Lithuanian educators and school administrators who are not only curious but also open to innovation in education.

The conference was dynamic and full of insights into the various aspects of integrating games into the learning process.

The event shared experiences from the GameWork project, which focuses on educational gaming environments and strategies to make students' homework engaging and effective in terms of information absorption.

Two of outcomes of the project were presented during the presentation. One of them, an international study carried out at the beginning of the project in partner schools in Lithuania, Greece and Portugal to analyse the benefits and needs of students from different countries and cultures in the gamification process in the classroom. The elements and mechanisms of gamification are also discussed, with examples of effective and motivating gamification principles for pupils.

The second part of the event, the workshop "Gamifying Homework for Students", gave teachers the opportunity to try out the interactive GameWork homework environment to show teachers creative ways to turn an often ordinary homework task into an engaging and rewarding experience. This interactive environment has the features and functionalities detailed in the first result: allowing students to self-assess their homework progress, introducing healthy competition between students (using rewards and leaderboards), offering rewards to students, allowing teachers to monitor performance (both progress and accuracy), and modifying the future homework based on student progress. The workshop aimed to show teachers creative ways of turning an often routine homework task into an engaging and rewarding experience Other Erasmus+ projects were also presented during the event, linking the use of gamification elements in education and providing the opportunity to test the practical results in workshops dedicated to each project.

The feedback received during the conference showed that the topics presented during the event are highly relevant and that such events motivate teachers, encourage the exchange of experiences with teachers from other schools and the discussion of current issues.

Thank you to all those who participated and see you next time 👋

Let us remind you about GameWork objectives!

Main objectives
Alleviate students’ reluctance to do homework by developing a gamified environment for organising homework that will use gamification techniques to engage and motivate students to do their homework. Therefore, this approach promotes innovative pedagogies and methods for teaching, learning, and assessment and supports students and teachers to use digital technologies in creative, collaborative, and efficient ways.

Particular objectives
Homework organisation Learners can access the environment with their smartphone or tablet and see the daily list of activities that they must perform to prepare for the next day, ticking the completed ones.
Engage students from the early stages of development, allowing us to investigate their views and ideas about gamified homework.
Progress monitoring (for students and teachers). A verification process will be designed for a student not to skip the assignments and declare them untruthfully complete.

Yes, you read it right!

"No Homework Day was created by couple Thomas and Ruth Roy as a means to help students focus on activities other than homework. It is expected that on this day, parents give their children a break from homework and that teachers at school equally take a break from giving homework.
Research has shown that homework can lead to stress, thereby being counterproductive to the learning process. Homework eats up children’s free time for other activities necessary for development, and its importance in learning is rather obscure. Professors at Duke University have suggested that the 10-minute rule should apply to homework.
The No Homework Day isn’t about removing homework completely from the picture, but it is meant for everyone involved to take a step back and relax. It is about giving children a break. No Homework Day encourages students to take a break from homework for a day and focus on other rewarding activities like sleeping, reading a good novel, creating art, playing a sport, or any other such activity" - read more on: https://nationaltoday.com/no-homework-day/
