Researchers’ Night 2026!

On 25 September 2026, GenAI-EduMap, AI-Driven Educators Academy, GenAI4ED Project, and AIware projects came together at Researchers’ Night at Ellinogermaniki Agogi, in a joint event organised in the context of the PICO project.

The event brought together more than 400 visitors, students, parents, educators, researchers and members of the wider public, offering an engaging opportunity to explore Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI and discuss their potential to transform teaching and learning.

The joint event highlighted the importance of bringing AI-related research and innovation closer to the school community and the wider public, fostering dialogue around the opportunities, challenges and responsible use of AI in education.

🏫 Back to school with GenAI: where should the boundaries be?

Would you let GenAI explain a difficult concept?
Help improve a piece of writing?
Generate feedback? Create assessment questions? Support homework?

And where should students, teachers and schools draw the line between useful GenAI support and what should remain human-led?

This is exactly what GenAI-EduMap is setting out to explore.

🌍 Across Greece, Cyprus, Ireland and Sweden, we aim to engage 800+ teachers, students, parents/caregivers, school leaders and policymakers to understand:

🔹 how GenAI is actually being used in education
🔹 its impact on learning, creativity, critical thinking and autonomy
🔹 concerns around over-reliance, accuracy, privacy and academic integrity
🔹 whether schools have the guidance, training and safeguards they need
🔹 what evidence policymakers need before GenAI practices can be scaled

The findings will inform our classroom use cases, GenAI tools, educator training, implementation guidance and policy recommendations.

🔎 How ready are European education systems for Generative AI?

This is one of the questions we are exploring through the GenAIEduMap policy mapping activities currently underway across Greece, Cyprus, Ireland and Sweden.

Our teams are taking a broad view of the policy environment that shapes GenAI use in education, including national AI and digital education strategies, curriculum and assessment frameworks, teacher professional development, data protection, child safeguarding and school governance.

Across the four countries, we are systematically examining:
🔹 how AI and GenAI are addressed in teaching, learning and assessment
🔹 how policies support AI literacy and teacher capacity
🔹 provisions for ethics, human oversight, privacy and data protection
🔹 implications for curriculum, inclusion and academic integrity
🔹 who the key policy and governance actors are
🔹 what evidence exists of implementation and promising practice
🔹 and, importantly, where gaps remain between policy ambition and school-level practice

The work also includes national policy inventories, stakeholder mapping, good-practice cases, gap analysis and policy-readiness assessment, allowing us to examine dimensions such as policy maturity, institutional readiness, teacher capacity, ethical governance, inclusion and scalability.

GenAI-EduMap compares evidence across different education systems, aims to create a stronger understanding of what enables responsible, scalable and pedagogically meaningful GenAI adoption in education. Evidence from this wotk will feed directly into the project’s implementation guidance and policy recommendations.

The policy mapping is part of WP2, led by Luleå tekniska universitet / Luleå University of Technology, (LTU), with University College Dublin (UCD) leading the policy mapping task.

National work is being carried forward with our education-authority partners, including the Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus (CPI) in Cyprus, the Institute of Educational Policy/ Ινστιτούτο Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής (IEP) in Greece and Skolverket in Sweden.

An important contribution from the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute/ Παιδαγωγικό Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, our partner in GenAI-EduMap.

This national Policy Document and Guidelines provide a strong foundation for the responsible, ethical and pedagogically meaningful use of AI in schools. Within GenAI-EduMap, the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute brings this valuable policy expertise to our joint work on mapping national approaches, identifying implementation needs and developing evidence-based guidance for the responsible integration of Generative AI across European education systems.

We are pleased to see the document now available in English, supporting wider European collaboration and policy dialogue.

💡 Co-creating meaningful GenAI use cases for the classroom

On Tuesday, 7 July, AI Horizons in Education International Course 2026, we had the pleasure of facilitating an interactive GenAIEduMap co-design workshop with an outstanding group of educators.

Working in thematic teams, such as upper primary education, information technology, science, humanities and more, participants designed innovative classroom scenarios based on the GenAI-EduMap pedagogical framework.

Guided by principles such as original thinking first, critical evaluation of AI-generated outputs, and meaningful human-AI collaboration, they explored how Generative AI can support effective teaching and learning.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The creativity and pedagogical insight of the participating educators exceeded our expectations. Each group presented inspiring ideas that will directly inform the development of the next generation of GenAI-EduMap platform workflows and classroom use cases.

Perhaps the most rewarding outcome was hearing educators express their willingness to test and validate these scenarios in their own classrooms, helping us ensure that the platform is built with teachers, for teachers.

☀️ A wonderful day at the AI Horizons in Education International Course 2026, where Spyridoula Stamouli and Vassilis Katsouros had the opportunity to present the session "Teaching in the Age of Generative AI: Opportunities, Risks and What Teachers Really Think".

A heartfelt thank you to Ellinogermaniki Agogi for the excellent organisation and warm hospitality. It was a real pleasure to contribute to the programme in such a welcoming summer setting!
