In old rural Ireland, a door left unlatched at night was never carelessness. It was a choice.

The house was closed against the cold, but never against the world. A stranger might be walking. A neighbour delayed. Someone lost between fields and boreens with night falling fast.

The fire was banked, not extinguished. A glow remained in the hearth. Sometimes a cup or a bit of food was left out, not an offering, just good manners.

And sometimes, though no one said it aloud, it was for those who were not quite human at all. It was believed some travellers preferred darkness, silence, and open doors. You did not invite them. You simply did not bar their way.

Doors were unlatched because locking everything tight was thought to invite misfortune. Because kindness was a form of protection. Because hospitality mattered, even when no one was watching.

Some traditions were never written down.
They lived quietly in habits, gestures, and the way a house was kept.
