The Marine Remote Sensing Group (MRSG) in the University of the Aegean conducts research for the exploration, analysis and visualization of the satellite and UAV data in the coastal environment. We combine state of the art algorithms and in situ measurements to develop new methods, technologies, and products for the visual representation of marine geospatial information. The group has gain experti

se in several disciplines of marine remote sensing including oil spill detection, oceanic phenomena identification, seagrass mapping, coastal bathymetry and coastline detection.

🌊BLUEQ common protocol

The BLUEQ common protocol includes:
📡 Remote Sensing: Satellite and drone (UAS) data are used to map the extent of seagrass habitats, providing wide coverage and high-resolution insights.
🤿 In Situ Measurements: SCUBA divers collect sediment cores and biodiversity data using acoustic and visual tools (ROV, towed cameras, sonar), ensuring detailed habitat assessment and ground-truthing of remote data.
🧪 Laboratory Analysis: Sediment samples are processed to estimate carbon stocks, sediment accumulation rates, and assess the bioavailability of organic carbon.
🖥️ BLUEQ Web-GIS Platform: A multilayer dataset is integrated and visualized through an interactive, digital platform—supporting marine conservation, planning, and climate policies.
This unified approach ensures consistency across all study sites, delivering robust scientific evidence to protect our coastal ecosystems.

🌊University of the Aegean – Marine Remote Sensing Group (MRSG)

The Marine Remote Sensing Group (MRSG) at the University of the Aegean is a research group specializing in the analysis and visualization of satellite and UAS data in marine and coastal environments.

Since 2014, MRSG has built strong expertise in:
🌱 seagrass mapping
🛢️ oil spill detection
🌊 coastal bathymetry
📍 shoreline change detection
🌍 monitoring oceanic phenomena

by combining advanced remote sensing technologies with field observations.

We are proud to have MRSG as the Lead Partner of the BLUEQ project, working closely with all partners to develop a joint protocol for mapping Posidonia oceanica meadows and assessing blue carbon stocks across the Adriatic–Ionian Region.

Through scientific excellence, innovative methodologies, and advanced technologies, the BLUEQ partnership is developing long-term monitoring tools for blue carbon ecosystems, improving access to spatial data and supporting regional strategies for conservation and sustainable management of seagrass habitats.

Together, we contribute to the integration of blue carbon into policy frameworks and marine spatial planning across the Adriatic–Ionian region.
