In English, years are most commonly spoken by splitting the four digits into two pairs of two numbers (e.g., 1984 is "nineteen eighty-four").

However, rules change slightly depending on the decade, like for years in the 2000s.
1. Standard Years (Before 2000)
Split the four digits into two separate two-digit numbers.
1985: nineteen eighty-five
1750: seventeen fifty
Years with a zero in the tens place: When the third digit is a zero, pronounce it as the letter "oh" (not zero).
1904: nineteen oh four
1709: seventeen oh nine

2. The 2000 to 2009 Era
Years at the start of the millennium are usually stated as a full thousand.
2000: two thousand
2005: two thousand and five (UK) or two thousand five (US)

3. Recent Years (2010 and beyond)
From 2010 onward, the two-digit split returns.
2016: twenty sixteen
2026: twenty twenty-six

4. Century Years Years ending in "00" are spoken as "hundred".
1800: eighteen hundred
1900: nineteen hundred
