We are a school for refugees, run by refugees in Mavrorouni camp in Greece. Because we are in the camp, we know what people want, and we adapt our classes

We offer language and skills classes to support refugees with integration and bridge communities.

We are so thankful for all our fantastic teachers who do such amazing work teaching and empowering our camp residents 🙏

Due to the changeable nature of life in the camp, our group of teachers is often changing size - but our team is very adaptable, and faces new challenges with resilience.

Frequently welcoming new teachers to the group also means that we get to draw on people with a diverse range of backgrounds and lived experiences, which enriches our classes even more 💙

Did you know that Lesvos has a rich history, dating back to ancient times?

The island was the home of famous ancient Greeks, such as Sappho (c. 600 BCE), who gave her name to Sappho Square in Mytilene. One of the most famous poetesses of all time, she wrote poems about love and about the education of women, and she was very influential.

Aristotle also came to the Island between 345 BCE and 343 BCE to study nature, which paved the way for his famous ‘history of animals’.

In 809 CE, the Byzantine Empress Irene was exiled here.

Our tailor shop is an important and integral part of life in Moria camp.

Being able to make and mend clothes gives residents agency and dignity, helps them to develop life skills and builds community in a place where what is broken can be made whole again 💙

Sometimes children find it harder to talk about their feelings.

Our art classes help them to use creativity to express themselves, as well as de-stress through playtime 💙

Did you know that Lesvos has a rich history, dating back to ancient times?

It was around 1050 BCE when Aeotolian Greeks came to the Island, which prospered under their civilisation.

The Island then went under Persian occupation (527 – 479 BCE) that ended with the naval Battle of Salamis, won by a coalition of Greeks.

This coalition didn’t last and during the Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BCE) Lesvos joined with the Athenian democracy and fought with Sparta’s allies.

In 333 BCE, the Persians used the Island as a base until Alexander the Great defeated them.

When the Roman invaded continental Greece in 168 BCE, they attacked the Island and destroyed the city of Antissa, north of today’s Andissa.

In the 1st century BCE, the Roman general Pompey the Great added the island to the Roman empire.

DID YOU KNOW?

The idea of refugee status was established by the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, according to which, anyone:

-facing discrimination regarding access to state support
-being persecuted
-facing a threat to their wellbeing

has the right to seek asylum in another country.

The convention also includes the principle of non-refoulement, according to which states are not allowed to push back asylum seekers until their claim has been treated fairly.

The label "refugee" has been politicised and used in populist discourses as a derogatory term, but in reality, being a refugee means being very strong and resourceful in the face of hardship.

We have so many creative and resilient people at the camp and in our school community. The stigma that refugees face means it's even more important that we celebrate their talents and individuality 💙

Our tailor shop is very popular 👕👖

People come to repair all kinds of clothing items here, so that they can be well-dressed in their daily lives.

This is very important because the press often publishes images that show refugees with dirty and damaged clothes - so being able to dress well is a matter of dignity.

We believe it is important for people to gain literacy in their home language. This also helps them to learn other languages as they build a new life in a new country.

We teach Farsi to help build this foundation 💙
