Μαρτάκι (Martaki) - A Small Bracelet with a Big Meaning

If you’re in Greece in March, you’ll probably notice people, especially children, wearing a simple red and white string bracelet. This is called Μαρτάκι (martaki), and it’s one of the sweetest seasonal traditions you’ll come across as an expat.
What is it?
The Martaki is a handmade bracelet made from twisted red and white thread, traditionally worn from March 1st.
Why do people wear it?
According to tradition, the bracelet protects the wearer from the strong March sun, especially from getting sunburned. The red symbolizes life and vitality, while the white represents purity.
When is it worn?
People put it on the 1st of March and wear it until the end of the month.
Or when you see the first swallow of spring, tying the bracelet to a tree so the birds can use it for their nests

A simple, colorful way to join in on Greek traditions, and a great conversation starter for expats!

"Berlitz teaches you how to speak. No doubt about that.
Among many of our learners, the biggest challenge isn’t a lack of knowledge, it’s the fear of making a mistake. You know the word. You know the structure. And still… you pause. That’s exactly where our teachers step in. They know how to keep you in the conversation, guide you through the moment of hesitation, and help you get the courage as well as grow confidence.
That’s our goal: turning “I understand” into “I can express it.” Our classes are built around speaking from the start. And our teachers are the reason it works. They go through training to activate language from day one: keeping learners in the conversation, adjusting the level in real time, and building confidence through guided practice.
Our approach has been refined for over a century. And it still comes down to the same thing: expert instruction, a proven method, and lessons that don’t stop at theory.

"French numbers are a whole different level 😅🇫🇷
One minute you feel confident… and the next you’re doing math in your head just to say a number. If you’ve ever paused mid-sentence trying to get it right, trust us, you’re not alone.
French learners everywhere can definitely relate 😂

Greek Phrase of the Week: Έλα (ela)
This little word is super versatile! It literally means “Come!" but it can also mean “No way!”, expressing surprise or disbelief or “Hello” when answering the phone
Fun fact: Greeks use it all the time, so saying Έλα! makes you sound like a local 😄

Greek phrase of the week 🇬🇷
Καλή όρεξη — enjoy your meal
Perfect for this week’s Τσικνοπέμπτη, the Thursday before Lent when everyone grills meat and the whole country smells like BBQ 🔥🥩
5 Essential Tips for Surviving Tsiknopempti (Greek BBQ Thursday) 🇬🇷🔥

1. Expect smoke. Everywhere.
Your street, your balcony, your clothes. Tsiknopempti literally means *“Smoky Thursday.” Lean into it—or keep windows closed and laundry inside unless you want eau de souvlaki.

2. No vegetarian explanations required… but be prepared 😅
If you don’t eat meat, that’s okay—but you will be offered some. A polite “όχι, ευχαριστώ” (no, thank you) plus a smile goes a long way. Stock up on sides, cheese, bread, and wine.

3. Supermarkets get wild. Plan ahead.
Meat sells out fast, queues get long, and charcoal becomes gold. Either shop early—or skip cooking entirely and let your neighborhood taverna do the heavy lifting.

4. Office productivity drops to zero.
Many workplaces grill at the office. Yes, even banks. Don’t schedule serious meetings; do schedule stretchy pants and tolerance for loud laughter.

5. Participation beats perfection.
You don’t need a grill, a plan, or Greek relatives. Show up, say yes to a plate, toast with a plastic cup of wine, and enjoy being part of the chaos. That’s the whole point.

Bonus tip: If your hair smells like smoke the next day, congrats—you did Tsiknopempti right. 😉

Happy Tsiknopempti to all expats surviving (and thriving) in Greece!
