AirSense: From Prototype to a Complete Educational Air Quality System
Following the launch of the AirSense project, work has continued with important developments towards a complete, hands-on air quality monitoring and education system for schools across Europe.
STEM Education has continued developing the AirSense Monitoring Station, refining its electronics, sensors, programming and overall design. The station has now evolved into a complete educational tool, enabling students to collect and explore real-world environmental data while learning about electronics, programming, science and sustainability.
Alongside the station's development, the AirSense Reference Manual has been completed, covering the station's components, connections, programming and use. This documentation will support educators and project partners in working with — and replicating — the station in educational settings.
Project partners also came together for a series of internal training sessions, designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills needed for the next stages of AirSense. The training programme included:
● Student-Centered Approaches + Maker Education — NUCLIO
● Innovative Assessment and UDL — NUCLIO
● Refresher micro:bit Course — NUCLIO
● Building an Air Quality Station with Electronics and Programming — WRO
● Analyzing Data in the Context of School Curricula — BCO
● Citizen Science in Education — ECSA
As WRO, STEM Education led the practical session "Building an Air Quality Station with Electronics and Programming," focusing on the hands-on development of the AirSense Station — its sensors, electronics and programming.
The development of the physical station is complemented by the AirSense digital platform, linking environmental monitoring, data collection and educational activities. The platform will allow students and educators to work with real-world air quality data as a basis for investigation and learning.
With the station, documentation, training and digital infrastructure all progressing, AirSense is moving into its next phase: turning these tools into meaningful educational experiences for teachers and students across Europe.
Through hands-on experimentation, data analysis and Citizen Science, AirSense aims to help young learners understand the environment around them — and become active participants in building a healthier, more sustainable future.
