A week away shouldn't be a luxury.

Yet across the EU, many could not afford a one-week holiday away from home in 2025.

A holiday is more than leisure time. It is an opportunity to rest, spend time with loved ones, and support physical and mental well-being.

The figures highlight persistent inequalities across Europe and remind us that tackling poverty and social exclusion remains a key challenge. Through our work, we have consistently called for:

🔹 ensuring decent living conditions for all;
🔹 universal access to affordable, quality social and essential services;
🔹 addressing inequalities through inclusive policies.

On 1 January 2025, there were 230 million women and 221 million men in the EU.

🔹This corresponds to a ratio of 104.2 women per 100 men, which means that there were 4.2% more women than men.

🇱🇹Lithuania (110.4)

Have you heard about the scientist who introduced Marie Skłodowska to her future life partner and colleague Pierre Curie?

In his laboratory, inventor and Nobel Prize physicist Gabriel Lippmann supported a Polish student in her research, Marie Skłodowska. Lippmann introduced Marie to his collaborator in piezoelectricity, Pierre Curie. The couple would turn out to be one of the most Nobel Prize-awarded families ever.

Lippmann himself was a pioneer in early colour photography.

In February 1891, he announced to the Paris Academy of Sciences: "I have succeeded in obtaining the image of the spectrum with its colors on a photographic plate whereby the image remains fixed and can remain in daylight without deterioration."

His method was hard to use and never came into widespread use, but the feasibility of taking photographs in natural colours stimulated the desire for such technologies. Lippmann was awarded the 1908 physics prize for his method of producing colour photography.
