Το Εργαστήριο GERi προσπαθεί να πρωτοπορεί στην καινοτόμα, επιστημονική και εφαρμοσμένη
έρευνα στους τομείς της γεωμορφολογίας, της εδαφολογίας και της διαχείρισης των παρόχθιων
περιοχών. Έμφαση δίνεται στην υδρογεωμορφολογία και πιο συγκεκριμένα στις δι

αδικασίες
υδατικής διαβρωτικής, τους μη σημειακούς ρύπους και τις βέλτιστες πρακτικές συντήρησης και
διαχείρισης. Επίσης στα κύρια ενδιαφέροντα του είναι οι λειτουργίες και η διαχείριση των
περιοδικών και εφήμερων ρεμάτων και χείμαρρων. Οι οικοσυστημικές υπηρεσίες των παρόχθιων
περιοχών αλλά και άλλων ημί-υδάτινων οικοσυστημάτων (υγρότοποι και δέλτα) μελετώνται καθώς
και οι επιπτώσεις των αστικών, γεωργικών και άλλων ανθρωπογενών δραστηριοτήτων, και οι
βέλτιστες πρακτικές συντήρησης και διαχείρισης. Γενικά, το Εργαστήριο GERi προωθεί την
υιοθέτηση ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης υδάτινων πόρων, οικοσυστημικών και οικοϋδρολογικών
προσεγγίσεων και λύσεων που βασίζονται στην φύση, στην Ελλάδα και την Μεσόγειο. Η εφαρμογή
αυτών των προσεγγίσεων γίνεται με την χρήση καινοτόμων τεχνολογιών όπως είναι τα υδρολογικά
μοντέλα και η χρήση μη επανδρωμένων αεροσκαφών. Ο στόχος είναι η εφαρμογή βέλτιστων
πρακτικών συντήρησης και διαχείρισης με στοχευμένες προσεγγίσεις. Ένα άλλο βασικό
χαρακτηριστικό είναι η συμμετοχή των ενδιαφερομένων στην έρευνα που οδηγεί σε πιο
εφαρμοσμένες μεθόδους και λύσεις. Η κλιματική αλλαγή επηρεάζει τον υδρολογικό κύκλο και οι
επιπτώσεις της μελετώνται με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις πλημμύρες και την ξηρασία. Τέλος η καινοτόμα
έρευνα του εργαστήριου στοχεύει να συμβάλλει στο ΣΥΜΠΛΟΚΟ Νερό, Ενέργεια και Τροφή.
Μέλη του Εργαστήριου GERi συμμετέχουν ενεργά στην Έδρα UNESCO Chair Con-E-ECt, MEdECC,
SMIRES και το Mountain Partnership, καθώς διδάσκουν και στα μεταπτυχιακά προγράμματα
«Άνθρωπος και Νερό» και «Ανάλυση και Διαχείριση Ανθρωπογενών και Φυσικών Καταστροφών». Το
Εργαστήριο GERi έχει συμμετάσχει και σε πολλά εθνικά και διεθνή ερευνητικά έργα (π.χ. Streams-2-
Suppress-Fires, Map-Erosion, MEST, ECOMED, WaSec, Protect-Streams-4-Sea ) και έχει δημιουργήσει συνεργασίες με
πανεπιστήμια και οργανισμούς από όλες τις ηπείρους του κόσμου.
