How did the geology of Russia and Alaska become linked? A new study in by Jeffrey M. Amato and colleagues reveals the discovery of the “Beringia Arc”—a massive, 2,200-km-long continental volcano-plutonic belt that stretched from the Russian Far East all the way across Alaska during the mid-Cretaceous (115 to 70 million years ago).

Using new U-Pb dating and isotopic data, the team connects scattered magmatic rocks into a single, unifying tectonic model of an ancient, Andean-type subduction zone.
