🌱The visit to Preveza and Kyani Akti Beach, held from 21 to 23 July as part of the PREBIODUNES project, was successfully completed. The two selected candidates, one from Greece and one from Italy, had the opportunity to conduct an on-site assessment of Kyani Akti Beach and meet with representatives of the Municipality of Preveza to discuss the challenges facing the area, as well as the actions currently being planned.

During a presentation at the Municipal Hall, the candidates shared their ideas for a pilot case focused on the restoration and protection of Kyani Akti Beach. The discussion explored how their proposals could be adapted to the municipality’s needs, priorities, and environmental goals.

👏We would like to thank the candidates and the Municipality of Preveza for their valuable participation and constructive collaboration.

🌊 A day at the beach for biodiversity!
A beach day became an opportunity to discover, learn and act for nature.
On 5 July, Lido Conchiglie (Gallipoli) hosted the joint outreach event of the PREBIODUNES and SAMESEA projects: an afternoon where science met citizens, families, tourists and local communities to celebrate the beauty and importance of coastal and marine biodiversity.
🌱 From the fragile world of coastal dunes to the protection of iconic marine species, participants discovered why healthy ecosystems are essential for our future.
🐢 The event highlighted the importance of protecting:
• loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta)
• bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
• Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus)
Through interactive activities, guided dune visits and practical demonstrations, visitors learned how everyone can help protect biodiversity — from respecting coastal habitats to knowing how to act when encountering marine wildlife.
📘 Discover the PREBIODUNES Coastal Dunes Vademecum and learn more about the hidden value of coastal dunes, their plants and wildlife, and how we can all contribute to their conservation.
💙 Together, we can build a future where people and nature thrive side by side.

The Politecnico di Bari, lead partner of the PREBIODUNES project, joined the IPA ADRION Programme capitalisation event "From Results to Uptake" in Rimini on 24 June, showcasing impactful results and strengthening cooperation across the Adriatic-Ionian region.

As part of Thematic Cluster No. 6, "Biodiversity and Marine Habitats Protection", PREBIODUNES promotes innovative solutions to protect fragile coastal dune ecosystems, balancing sustainable tourism development, addressing erosion phenomena, and mitigating climate change impacts.

Matilda Mali, PREBIODUNES Project Manager and cluster spokesperson, presented the outcomes of a fruitful peer learning process developed with SAMSEA, BLUEQ, CRADLS (IPA ADRION) and PALLIPES (IT-SL). The findings highlighted how inter-project cooperation can enhance coastal resilience, strengthen biodiversity protection through shared tools and strategies, and create synergies between environmental preservation and sustainable tourism.

PREBIODUNES' participation reinforces Politecnico di Bari's commitment to transnational cooperation and to ensuring long-term regional impact beyond individual projects.

Many thanks to the ADRION Programme for creating opportunities to connect projects and amplify results!🌱

🌱On May 27, the team of CTI visited Kyani Akti in Preveza within the framework of the PREBIODUNES project.

During the field visit, plant-related data were collected, drone-based monitoring was carried out, and visual documentation of the coastal area was captured. These activities generated valuable material that will help support the ongoing study and monitoring of the local environment.

🔎The collected material will contribute to further analysis of the local dune ecosystem and support the project's monitoring and conservation objectives, providing a useful basis for future research and evaluation activities within PREBIODUNES.🌎

📢 The first Newsletter is now online!

We retrace the three major transnational milestones that have driven our progress and allowed us to share our key results for coastal dune protection:

📍 Athens (June 2025): The official launch of operational activities and scientific mapping.

📍 Rijeka (December 2025): Standardizing monitoring protocols and strengthening transnational cooperation.

📍 Neum (April 2026): Reviewing resilience models and technical actions across our five partner countries.

Join our macroregional network and discover the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) we are putting into action.

Collaboration and Field Insights at the Pilot Site

Within the PREBIODUNES project, and with the contribution of partners PP8 – Public Institution University of Montenegro, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ME) – and PP9 – Environmental Protection Agency (ME) – the pilot area of Velika Plaža (Ulcinj, Montenegro) recently hosted a study visit by Italian Master’s student Danila D’Aquino.

During the visit, the team also met with Zenepa Lika, founder of the Dr. Martin Schneider-Jacoby Association, to exchange perspectives on community engagement and environmental protection in the area.

The activities were also covered by local TV station TV Teuta, helping to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this unique coastal ecosystem. 🎥 https://youtu.be/774sZzh1ZIA?si=bbhZnD67wVR6KtCK

By combining field experience and local knowledge, the project continues to support sustainable approaches to dune restoration.

Field Action for Biodiversity Conservation at Velika Plaža

As part of the PREBIODUNES project, activities led by partners PP8 – Public Institution University of Montenegro, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ME) – and PP9 – Environmental Protection Agency (ME) – involved a team coordinated by Prof. Danijela Stešević carrying out a series of field actions in the pilot area, focused on ecosystem monitoring and restoration.

A key highlight was the collection of seeds for the Germplasm Bank, supporting the long-term conservation of native plant species. In parallel, high-precision drone mapping, coordinated by Filip Vujović (EPA Montenegro), enabled detailed spatial analysis of dune habitats and provided essential data for future restoration measures.

These efforts represent an important step toward safeguarding fragile coastal ecosystems through science-based and technology-driven approaches.

🌊 Technical site visit to Lido Conchiglie (Gallipoli) to safeguard our coastal dunes!

On 14 April, as part of the European PREBIODUNES project (Interreg IPA ADRION), researchers Matteo Dimaggio (Italy) and Eni Agolli (Albania) carried out an inspection of the pilot site in Gallipoli (LE, Italy). The goal? To bring the proposals from the Poliba-DICATECh Ideas Competition to life and protect these fragile ecosystems from the heavy pressures of summer tourism.

The two projects work together in perfect synergy: 🌿 Matteo's project focuses on nature-based interventions, reintroducing native flora, and managing pedestrian access to halt soil erosion. 💧 Eni's work centres on hydrological monitoring and implementing eco-friendly wastewater treatment systems along the coast.

This invaluable collaboration will provide the Municipality of Gallipoli with a fully integrated masterplan to boost the resilience of our coastline! 🤝
