🇪🇺 Building democratic schools for the future.
 
At ICICTE 2026, the coACTION Multiplier Event brought together educators, researchers and policymakers to explore how schools across Europe can strengthen democratic culture through participation, inclusion and innovation.
 
The session opened with inspiring contributions from George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece and General Rapporteur on Democracy at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and Brigitta Rupp, coordinator of the coACTION project, who presented the project’s vision for transforming schools into more democratic learning communities.
 
Throughout the event, project partners shared practical tools and experiences, including:

🔹 The Guide to Democratic Empowerment
🔹 The Democratic Empowerment Platform (DEMP)
🔹 The Year of Democracy pilot programme
🔹 Real experiences from schools implementing democratic practices
 
Together, we are helping schools across Europe create environments where every voice matters and democratic values become part of everyday learning.

On 17 July, Agrupamento de Escolas Terras do Ave, in Pedome, Portugal, hosted a coACTION multiplier event with more than 140 participants, including teachers, education professionals, parents and representatives from other schools.

A great opportunity to share the project’s results and promote cooperation within the educational community.

🌍 coACTION at ICICTE 2026: Bringing Democratic School Transformation to an International Audience

We are proud to announce that the coACTION project will be prominently featured at the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education (ICICTE 2026), taking place in Rhodes, Greece, from 14–16 July 2026.

The conference programme includes a dedicated coACTION Multiplier Event entitled:

📌 From Participation to Democratic Culture: European Approaches to School Transformation

Participants will have the opportunity to explore key project outcomes, including:

✅ The Guide to Democratic Empowerment
✅ The Democratic Empowerment Platform (DEMP)
✅ The “Year of Democracy” Pilot Programme
✅ Lessons learned from implementing democratic school practices across Europe

In addition, coACTION will be showcased during the conference Poster Session, providing further opportunities for dialogue, networking, and dissemination among researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world.

Through its participation at ICICTE 2026, coACTION continues to promote democratic culture, active participation, and whole-school approaches that empower schools to become more inclusive, participatory, and democratic learning communities.

Countering hate speech is central to democratic education, as it promotes respect for human rights, inclusion, critical thinking, and active participation in a diverse and democratic society.

The language we use shapes attitudes, influences behaviour, and helps define what is seen as normal and acceptable in society.

Hate speech does not emerge in isolation. It can reinforce prejudice, fuel discrimination, and contribute to environments where exclusion, hostility, and violence become more likely. Online and offline, hate speech undermines people's dignity, safety, and ability to participate equally in society.

On this International Day for Countering Hate Speech, let's reaffirm our commitment to respectful and inclusive dialogue. Creating spaces free from hate is essential to building a society where everyone can live, participate, and thrive in safety and equality.
