The expected fossil fuel reserves, along with the continuous environmental degradation, underline the necessity to turn to more environmentally friendly energy resources. However, the significant exploitation of variable or even stochastic solar and wind potential challenges the market balance and the stability of most electrical networks. On the other hand, hydropower stands out, for almost one century, with its contribution to the global annual electricity consumption being nowadays almost 15%. In Greece, acknowledging the stagnation noted in the last fifteen years in the exploitation of the existing hydropower potential through large hydropower plants, small hydropower applications come to the forefront for revitalizing the pertinent total hydropower growth rates. Nevertheless, the relevant potential remains strongly under-exploited. The present work investigates the current status of the small hydropower potential exploitation with special focus on Greece, considering aspects such as the installed capacity and the geographical distribution of the corresponding power plants, their annual energy generation, and their pertinent Capacity Factors' time evolution. The financial support schemes offered in the past by the Greek State are also investigated in comparison with the current status. The current progress and challenges of small hydropower installations are thoroughly scrutinized, thus revealing the future prospects and substantial benefits that could occur from both carbon-free, relatively stable electricity generation and a financial perspective.

Νέοι στην Πρώτη Γραμμή για την Προστασία του Περιβάλλοντος με το Athens Youth Energy.

Ο Δήμος Αθηναίων, στο πλαίσιο του Youth Climate Action Fund, συνεχίζει την προσπάθειά του για την ενημέρωση και ευαισθητοποίηση των νέων γύρω από περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα, μέσα από μια σειρά διαδραστικών δράσεων που ενισχύουν τη συμμετοχή και τη δημιουργικότητά τους.

Η ομάδα του Εργαστηρίου Ήπιων Μορφών Ενέργειας & Προστασίας Περιβάλλοντος του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Αττικής (ΠαΔΑ), μετά την επιτυχημένη συνεργασία της με το 4ο ΓΕΛ Αθήνας στο έργο CleanBioAthens – με κεντρικό άξονα την ατμοσφαιρική ρύπανση και την κλιματική αλλαγή – προχωρά φέτος στην υλοποίηση ενός νέου, εξίσου σημαντικού έργου: Athens Youth Energy. Το έργο στοχεύει στην ενημέρωση και κινητοποίηση των μαθητών σχετικά με την εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας και τη σημασία της για την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος.

Στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος, μαθητές του σχολείου, με την υποστήριξη της ομάδας του Athens Youth Energy και των καθηγητών τους, δημιουργούν οπτικοακουστικό υλικό αφιερωμένο στην εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας. Μέσα από τη δική τους οπτική και γλώσσα, μεταφέρουν το μήνυμα στους συμμαθητές τους για το πώς μπορούν όλοι να συμβάλουν στη διατήρηση ενός κόσμου όπου μπορούμε να αναπνέουμε ελεύθερα.
Την Παρασκευή 17 Οκτωβρίου 2025, η ομάδα του Athens Youth Energy παραχώρησε συνέντευξη στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό ΑΘΗΝΑ 9.84, παρουσιάζοντας τη δράση και αναδεικνύοντας τη σημασία της εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας στην καθημερινή ζωή. Η πρωτοβουλία αυτή αποτέλεσε μια ακόμη ευκαιρία για την ευαισθητοποίηση των ακροατών και την ενίσχυση του διαλόγου γύρω από τα ζητήματα βιωσιμότητας.

Η προστασία του περιβάλλοντος αποτελεί υπόθεση όλων μας, με τους νέους να δείχνουν τον δρόμο προς ένα πιο βιώσιμο μέλλον.
