"He is the only painter who has ever represented the surface of calm, or the force of agitated water; who has represented the effects of space on distant objects, or who has rendered the abstract beauty of natural colour". -- John Ruskin (1848)
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was already considered to be Britain's finest painter of landscapes and seascapes when, in his fifties, he began to explore the ways in which "atmosphere" could be captured on canvas. The result were hundreds of paintings and watercolors that resemble abstract paintings at first glance but are particularly suited to depicting "turbulence" of the four Greek elements of air, water, fire and earth.
What is even more remarkable about these paintings is that there are no precedents for them in his early work. By the time he turned forty Turner had already established himself as an artist who was both the master of the neo-classical style and a leading representative of the new Romantic movement -- a superb painter of landscapes, seascapes, allegorical and historical scenes -- and a richly rewarded one at that. But, in 1819, on one of his many trips to Venice, he started on a series of watercolors which would have a profound effect on the development of his art, opening his eyes to the possibilities of creating watercolor effects in oil. So unsure was Turner of how his paintings in this new style would be received that he virtually stopped exhibiting at the Royal Academy, thereby resigning himself to a heavy hit on his income. Upon his death in 1850 he, like Munch a century later, willed all his remaining works to the nation -- some three hundred paintings and two thousand watercolors and drawings -- as well as his personal fortune of 80,000 pounds (a very large sum at the time) for the support of impoverished artists -- an act which not only earned him the gratitude of generations of visitors to the Tate Gallery and British Museum, but also made him a true "artist-hero."
The pictures cover the period from about 1834 through 1850, and are arranged by their Butlin & Joll catalogue number, which roughly reflects the order in which they were painted or exhibited.
