A few words on compulsory education

One of the tricks of opponents of the idea of homeschooling is to imply — without of course saying it because they know it’s a lie — that schooling is a little-very “natural” state. Things have always been that way and always are. Of course this is a psychological trick. The mind fills up and can't think that things weren't that way at all.

In short, historical reality is as follows. Until the 18th century there was no compulsory education with compulsory attendance anywhere in any country. Until then the family and not the state was responsible for the child's education either in a school or at home by parents or relatives. The first to introduce it was Frederick the Great of Prussia. With the help of the Minister of Education Baron von Zedlitz he established in 1763 compulsory education with compulsory attendance for boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years. Of course this was a class measure: the nobles could be exempted with a simple application. What interests us from the point of view of modern education is the admiration of the socialist Congressman Oratio Mann for the Prussian model and the discipline he had achieved. Pay attention to discipline and equality, not educational achievement because in this view both French high schools and high schools in the rest of Germany were clearly superior.

Returning to the United States imposed on Massachusetts the model of mandatory training with massive rations of police and military violence on those who did not comply. And as they say The rest is History. By the eve of World War I, compulsory education had spread throughout the United States and in many other countries.

Το ήξερες ότι το άρθρο 26 της Οικουμενικής Διακήρυξης των Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων ορίζει: «Οι γονείς έχουν a priori δικαίωμα να επιλέξουν το είδος της εκπαίδευσης που θα δοθεί στα παιδιά τους». Δεσμευόμαστε να προασπίσουμε αυτό το θεμελιώδες δικαίωμα και να υπερασπιζόμαστε την εκπαιδευτική αυτονομία στην Ελλάδα.
