Success for Byron College student in UK and BSO translation competition

This year, our students took part in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, a UK and BSO translation competition run by the Queen’s Translation Exchange at the University of Oxford (QTE). Erika Kosma was awarded area winner for BSO schools in Level 3 Russian.

The Anthea Bell Prize ( named in honour of the celebrated Asterix translator, is an annual competition open to secondary school students. A record-breaking 25,000 school pupils from 532 schools took part. Schools submitted thousands of student entries, over 5,400 of which were judged by a panel of renowned literary translators and Modern Languages students at the University of Oxford.

The surge in engagement comes as languages education faces significant challenges. The popularity of the Anthea Bell Prize indicates that creative, cultural content is the key to increasing uptake and attainment in languages.
Dr Charlotte Ryland, Director of QTE , said:

“The skills developed through translation – critical thinking, problem solving, empathy – set the rising generation up to thrive in our global economy. Our Anthea Bell Prize winners excel in all these skills, and I can’t wait to see what they go on to do.”

The Translation Exchange launched this competition for schools in 2020. The competition is inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell. It aims to promote language learning across the UK and to inspire creativity in the classroom. By providing teachers with the tools they need....

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate one of our talented Byron College students on her role in Cast Aside the Clouds.

Originally from Iran, she is helping bring a powerful and deeply meaningful story to audiences around the world .Since its release, Cast Aside the Clouds has received international attention, including its Greek premiere at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and has been recognized for shining a light on stories that are rarely told on screen.

Our Year 2 pupils are incredibly fortunate to be taught by two outstanding teachers, Ms Eleni and Ms Electra. Their warmth, patience and unwavering dedication create a happy, supportive classroom where every child feels valued and encouraged to flourish.

They bring enthusiasm, creativity and genuine care to everything they do, inspiring a love of learning while helping each pupil grow in confidence and independence. Their commitment to every child’s wellbeing and progress makes a lasting difference, and we are truly grateful for all they do for our Year 2 community.

A wonderful celebration of our students’ achievements this year at our Secondary End of Year Awards Assembly. We recognised excellence across our subject areas, celebrated the recipients of the Byron Certificate for their outstanding development of key competencies, and enjoyed some fantastic performances from our talented students. A fitting way to reflect on a year of hard work, growth and success. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Year 12 Porto Heli Trip: A fantastic few days celebrating the end of Year 12 and the completion of official exams. Alongside enjoying some well-earned downtime, students made a great start on their university applications by working on personal statements, CVs, course research and workshops covering applications, entry requirements and admissions tests.

Our final INSET day ended on a high, as colleagues came together to present their Joint Practice Development (JPD) projects.

It was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, celebrate professional learning, and see the impact of collaboration across Byron.

A fitting way to conclude our INSET programme and celebrate a year of learning together. 💙

Our eco ambassadors ended the year with the completion of their latest initiative. They had been working hard on collecting old notebooks and repurposing them into new notepads. After gifting some to our admin team, nurse and inclusion team they proceeded to selling the rest to their peers. This way, not only did they spread awareness of the importance of repurposing waste but they also collected some money to be put towards their future initiatives. Well done Eco Ambassadors and thank you for making our school a more sustainable place to be.

Well done to our KS3 Byron Certificate Silver winners who have worked really hard all year long by completing tasks from all 4 categories of CARE. This year we had around 50 Silver winners who completed at least 10 tasks focusing on the development of a variety of skills and competencies and some of them were only a couple of stickers away from Gold. Thank you to the Parents Association who generously supported their efforts by paying for a Pizza Party for them. The students ate and danced to music, celebrating each others achievements.
