We have been preserving, protecting and promoting Greece's past for over 140 years!

The School is a teaching institution that introduces graduate students to the sites and monuments of Greek civilization with an academic-year program and two summer sessions. The Blegen Library is dedicated to classical and archaeological studies, while the Gennadius Library, opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from Joannes Gennadius, concentrates on post-antique Greece. The Wiener Laboratory is an

internationally recognized research facility devoted to the application of scientific techniques to the study of archaeological materials in Greece. Since its earliest years, the School has sponsored archaeological exploration, particularly at Ancient Corinth and the Athenian Agora. Many other American excavation and survey projects are carried out under the auspices of the School, in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Culture. The American School's Publications Office produces books related to the mission of the School as well as Hesperia, one of the world's leading journals for scholarship on Greek studies.

The final article in the latest issue of Hesperia (95.2) is “The Printed Page and the Painted Column: An Architectural Microhistory of a Church in Ottoman Thessaly” by Nikos Magouliotis (ETH Zurich). Magouliotis explores how Ottoman craftspeople used liturgical books printed in Vienna and Venice as models for painted decoration at the church of Ayios Athanasios in Palamas, Thessaly (built 1810–1811). Through this analysis, Magouliotis demonstrates how the church’s painters copied the liturgical motifs and created a regional artistic idiom.

Το τελευταίο άρθρο του νέου τεύχους του Hesperia (95.2) είναι το «The Printed Page and the Painted Column: An Architectural Microhistory of a Church in Ottoman Thessaly» του Νίκου Μαγουλιώτη (ETH Zurich). O συγγραφέας διερευνά τον τρόπο με τον οποίο μια ομάδα αγιογράφων αξιοποίησε λειτουργικά βιβλία τυπωμένα στη Βιέννη και τη Βενετία ως πρότυπα για τον ζωγραφικό διάκοσμο του ναού του Αγίου Αθανασίου στον Παλαμά Θεσσαλίας, ο οποίος ανεγέρθηκε κατά τα έτη 1810–1811. Μέσα από την ανάλυσή του δείχνει ότι οι ζωγράφοι του ναού υιοθέτησαν και προσάρμοσαν διακοσμητικά και εικονογραφικά μοτίβα από τα έντυπα αυτά, συμβάλλοντας στη διαμόρφωση ενός ιδιαίτερου περιφερειακού καλλιτεχνικού ιδιώματος.

From early mornings to late nights, the 2026 Agora excavation team got it done—trench naps carried us through! This season, we continued digging north of Hadrian Street, in contexts ranging from the Early Modern period to the 5th century BCE. We were especially excited to keep exploring the Middle Byzantine neighborhood that once covered the whole area of the Agora. In addition to working on site, some members of our project also helped a team studying evidence for polychromy on the Temple of Hephaistos—preliminary results were breathtaking! In addition to excavating, students participated in cleaning ceramics and bone, cataloguing finds, and floating and processing archaeobotanical remains. They also learned from Agora researchers about topics including epigraphy, classical ceramics, Late Roman wells, modern brick manufacturing, and the Library of Pantainos. For funding the 2026 season, we thank the Packard Humanities Institute and Dr. David Packard, as well as our numerous other donors.

Από τα αξημέρωτα μέχρι αργά τη νύχτα, η ανασκαφική ομάδα της Αγοράς τα κατάφερε και για το 2026 με τους σύντομους υπνάκους μέσα στα σκάμματα να μας κρατούν όρθιους! Φέτος συνεχίσαμε την έρευνα βορείως της οδού Αδριανού, σε στρώματα που χρονολογούνται από τους Νεότερους Χρόνους έως τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ. και συνεχίσαμε τη διερεύνηση της μεσοβυζαντινής συνοικίας της Αγοράς. Παράλληλα, ορισμένα μέλη της ομάδας μας συμμετείχαν σε ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα για τη μελέτη των καταλοίπων αρχαίων χρωμάτων στον Ναό του Ηφαίστου, με τα προκαταρκτικά αποτελέσματα να είναι πραγματικά εντυπωσιακά. Οι φοιτητές εκπαιδεύτηκαν στον καθαρισμό κεραμικής και οστών, στην καταγραφή των ευρημάτων, στην επίπλευση και επεξεργασία αρχαιοβοτανικών καταλοίπων και παρακολούθησαν διάφορα μαθήματα. Για τη χρηματοδότηση της ανασκαφικής περιόδου του 2026 ευχαριστούμε θερμά το Packard Humanities Institute και τον Dr. David Packard, και τους λοιπούς δωρητές που στήριξαν το έργο μας.

The third article in the latest issue of Hesperia (95.2), “Coping with Catastrophes: Earthquakes, Benefactors, and Archiereis in Lycia in the Early 2nd Century CE” by Andrew Lepke (University of Muenster), reexamines seismic activity in Lycia by comparing a passage in Chronographia by John Malalas with epigraphic evidence from Lycian cities and reevaluates the chronology of major earthquakes in Lycia. With this article, Lepke suggests that a destructive event in 115 CE preceded the well-known catastrophe of 141/2 CE, further shedding light on how natural disasters influence urban development.

Το τρίτο άρθρο του νέου τεύχους του Hesperia (95.2), με τίτλο «Αντιμετωπίζοντας τις Καταστροφές: Σεισμοί, Ευεργέτες και Αρχιερείς στη Λυκία στις αρχές του 2ου αιώνα μ.Χ.», του Andrew Lepke (Πανεπιστήμιο του Muenster), επανεξετάζει τη σεισμική δραστηριότητα στη Λυκία, συγκρίνοντας ένα απόσπασμα από τη Χρονογραφία του Ιωάννη Μαλάλα με επιγραφικές μαρτυρίες από πόλεις της περιοχής και επαναξιολογεί τη χρονολόγηση των σημαντικότερων σεισμών. Με τη μελέτη αυτή, ο Lepke υποστηρίζει ότι ένα σεισμικό γεγονός το 115 μ.Χ. προηγήθηκε της γνωστής καταστροφής του 141/142 μ.Χ., φωτίζοντας περαιτέρω τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι φυσικές καταστροφές επηρέασαν την αστική ανάπτυξη και την ανοικοδόμηση των πόλεων.

The second Summer Seminar, “Chalkidike Peninsula: From Hellenic Colonization to Byzantium,” concluded on Monday, July 27, with great success, providing an enriching and memorable experience for all participants. Professors Amalia Avramidou and Amelia R. Brown, together with the students and contributions from guest scholars, explored a wide range of historical, archaeological, and topographical questions relating to Chalkidike. Their discussions highlighted the region’s significance not only at the local level but also within the broader historical developments spanning from Antiquity to the Byzantine period. As part of the seminar, participants visited numerous archaeological sites and museums, including Corinth, Chalkis, Eretria, Poseidi, Stageira, Akanthos, Olynthus, Torone, Thessaloniki, and Potidaea. Thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful and inspiring seminar!

Το δεύτερο Θερινό Σεμινάριο, με τίτλο «Η Χερσόνησος της Χαλκιδικής: Από τον Ελληνικό Αποικισμό έως το Βυζάντιο», ολοκληρώθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία τη Δευτέρα, 27 Ιουλίου, προσφέροντας σε όλες τις συμμετέχουσες και όλους τους συμμετέχοντες μια ιδιαίτερα εποικοδομητική και αξέχαστη εμπειρία. Οι καθηγήτριες Αμαλία Αβραμίδου και Amelia R. Brown, μαζί με τις φοιτήτριες και τους φοιτητές και με τη συμβολή προσκεκλημένων ερευνητών και ερευνητριών, διερεύνησαν ένα ευρύ φάσμα ιστορικών, αρχαιολογικών και τοπογραφικών ζητημάτων που αφορούν τη Χαλκιδική. Μέσα από τις συζητήσεις τους αναδείχθηκε η σημασία της περιοχής, όχι μόνο σε τοπικό επίπεδο, αλλά και στο ευρύτερο ιστορικό πλαίσιο των εξελίξεων από την Αρχαιότητα έως και τη Βυζαντινή περίοδο. Στο πλαίσιο του σεμιναρίου, οι συμμετέχοντες επισκέφθηκαν σημαντικούς αρχαιολογικούς χώρους και μουσεία, μεταξύ των οποίων η Κόρινθος, η Χαλκίδα, η Ερέτρια, το Ποσείδι, τα Στάγειρα, η Άκανθος, η Όλυνθος, η Τορώνη, η Θεσσαλονίκη και η Ποτίδαια. Ευχαριστούμε θερμά όλους και όλες όσοι και όσες συνέβαλαν στην πραγματοποίηση ενός ακόμη επιτυχημένου θερινού σεμιναρίου!

“Without formalities! Without passports!” In 1949, C. Varvias’ tourist agency, based in Cairo, advertised a 7-day cruise from Alexandria to the recently liberated Greek island of Rhodes aboard the deluxe steamer Rena. A decade later, a new ferry line connecting Greece and Italy (Patras–Brindisi) was inaugurated with the ferryboat Egnatia in 1960.

Vintage cruise pamphlets and ads like this beautifully document Greece’s post-war tourist boom and the growing quest for unique vacation experiences! 🚢☀

«Χωρίς γραφειοκρατία! Χωρίς διαβατήρια!» Το 1949, το ταξιδιωτικό πρακτορείο του Κ. Βαρβία με έδρα το Κάιρο, διαφήμιζε μια επταήμερη κρουαζιέρα από την Αλεξάνδρεια στην πρόσφατα απελευθερωμένη ελληνική Ρόδο με το πολυτελές ατμόπλοιο Ρένα. Μια δεκαετία αργότερα, το 1960, εγκαινιάστηκε μια νέα ακτοπλοϊκή γραμμή που συνέδεε την Ελλάδα με την Ιταλία (Πάτρα–Μπρίντιζι) με το πλοίο Εγνατία.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens proudly announces that the Gennadius Library has selected Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University’s distinguished research institute, as the recipient of the 2027 Gennadius Prize.

The award recognizes Dumbarton Oaks’ extraordinary contributions to Byzantine Studies and the advancement of knowledge of post-antique Greece. The prize will be presented at the American School’s Annual Gala on May 6, 2027, in New York City.

Congratulations to Dumbarton Oaks on this well-deserved honor and its enduring commitment to scholarship, research, and the study of the Greek and Byzantine worlds.

With a beautiful farewell party held on Tuesday, July 21, in the Loring Hall Garden, the summer session directors, students, staff, and guest speakers present in Athens gathered to celebrate the completion of the program. During this summer, Professors Michael Hoff and Nancy Serwint, the directors of the summer session, guided the group for six weeks through significant archaeological sites and museums throughout Greece, including Delphi, Knossos, Olympia, Meteora, Hosios Loukas, the Acropolis, Vergina, and many more destinations. Through visits, academic discussions, contributions from guest speakers, and shared experiences, the group formed strong bonds and created memories that will last a lifetime. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this special experience — the directors, students, guest speakers, and staff of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens!

Με μια όμορφη αποχαιρετιστήρια εκδήλωση την Τρίτη 21 Ιουλίου στον κήπο του Loring Hall, οι διευθυντές του θερινού προγράμματος, οι φοιτητές, το προσωπικό και οι προσκεκλημένοι ομιλητές που βρίσκονταν στην Αθήνα συγκεντρώθηκαν για να γιορτάσουν την ολοκλήρωσή του. As the 2026 excavation season comes to a close, we reflect on the student volunteers who helped further Corinth Excavations’ 130-year tradition of excavation, research, and community.

Our April team—Eric Hensley, Maaike Leeuwangh, Priscilla Dantas de Moraes, Daniel Qin, Anne Jing, and Margaret Justus—shared monumental discoveries in the field and enjoyed Easter celebrations in the village and in Athens. During the May session, Serafina Vasilodimitrakis-Hart, Kaley Wisner Gallus, George Veloudios, Izzy Boon, Chloe Gupta, and Kelly Zach were invited to participate in the long-awaited grand opening of the Frankish Area. The June team—Abbey Minor, Avi Goldstein, Emily Wiley, JJ Lugardo, Hannah Kloster, and Brettin Linder—quickly bonded over the excavations, site dogs, and matching hats.

Thank you all for your hard work, enthusiasm, and contributions to another memorable season at Ancient Corinth.

Η ανασκαφή του 2026 ολοκληρώθηκε στην Αρχαία Κόρινθο! Οι ανασκαφείς συνέβαλαν καθοριστικά στη συνέχιση της παράδοσης των Ανασκαφών για τα τελευταία 130 χρόνια στην ανασκαφική έρευνα και την επιστημονική μελέτη μέσα από τη συνεργασία και τις φιλίες τους με τους ανθρώπους της Αρχαίας Κορίνθου.

Τον Απρίλίο οι E. Hensley, M. Leeuwangh, P. Dantas de Moraes, D. Qin, A. Jing και M. Justus συμμετείχαν σε ιστορικές ανακαλύψεις στο πεδίο και απόλαυσαν το Πάσχα. Το Μάϊο, οι S.
