The Institute was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet and exchange ideas on their research, and discuss the future developments in their disciplines. Athens was chosen as the meeting place because of its long history and culture. The organizing and hos

ting of International Conferences and Symposiums, as well as Research and Publications are the basic activities of ATINER. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 200 International Conferences and other events, and has published close to 150 books. In 2012, the Association launched a series of conference paper publications (click here). Academically, the Association is organized into six Research Divisions and twenty-seven Research Units. Each Research Unit organizes at least an Annual International Conference and undertakes various small and large research projects. ATINER encourages other Institutions to participate as joint members in these research projects.

On Monday, 27 July 2026, as part of the academic program of the Athens Institute, a Symposium on “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching, Research, and Publishing: Personal Experiences from Users” was held at the Athens Institute premises in Athens. The symposium was moderated by Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President, Athens Institute & Professor (Adjunct), University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA.

The session featured presentations by Dr. Bob Uttl (Professor, Mount Royal University, Canada); Dr. Raid Suleiman (Professor, Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, Jordan); Dr. Sabrina Joseph (Provost and Professor, The American University of Rome, Italy); Dr. Gisele Tchamba (Faculty Member, Adventist University of Africa, Kenya); Dr. Laima Gerlitz (Head of European Project Center, University of Wismar, Germany); and Dr. Xinyu Xiao (Researcher, Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development, China).

Interventions were also delivered by Dr. Wensupu Yang (Associate, SAMI Consulting, UK); Dr. Spiro Doukas (Professor, American Public University, USA); Dr. Daphne Vidanec (Full Professor, Baltazar University of Applied Sciences, Croatia); Dr. Afsin Sahin (Professor, Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University, Türkiye); and Dr. Asanbe Comfort (Professor and Chair, Psychology Department, City University of New York, USA).

The symposium explored the growing role of artificial intelligence in higher education and scholarly work through the personal experiences of academics and researchers from around the world. Presentations and discussions examined how AI is transforming teaching practices, research methodologies, academic publishing, university governance, and policy development. Participants also reflected on the opportunities and challenges of human-AI collaboration, the evolving role of educators and researchers, and the importance of responsible and ethical use of AI in academia.

Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, was recently interviewed by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia (Barcelona) on the economics of football and the 2026 World Cup.

Drawing on his ongoing research published in the Athens Journal of Sports, and on a forthcoming study to be presented at the 22nd Annual International Conference on Sport & Exercise Science (www.atiner.gr/fitness), taking place 27-28 July 2026, in Athens, Greece, Dr. Papanikos discussed how population size and GDP per capita relate to national football performance. He noted that Norway, Portugal and Croatia outperformed expectations relative to their demographic and economic size in this World Cup, a result he attributes partly to elite individual talents such as Haaland, Ronaldo and Modrić, and partly to the large numbers of their players competing in Europe's top leagues.

Dr. Papanikos also addressed the disappointing showings of Germany and Italy, linking them to demographic ageing and economic stagnation, while cautioning that organizational and cultural factors matter as much as raw economic indicators. He further explained why major economies such as the United States, China and India have not translated their economic weight into footballing success, pointing to competition from other popular sports and the absence of a deep football tradition.

On Monday 20 July 2026, as part of the academic program of the Athens Institute, a Symposium on “Science and Technology in the Age of AI” was held at the Athens Institute premises in Athens.

The symposium was moderated by Dr. Bala Maheswaran, Director, Engineering Division, Athens Institute & Professor, Northeastern University, USA.

The session featured presentations by Dr. Nikos Mourtos (Professor, San Jose State University, USA); Dr. Timothy M. Young (Emeritus Professor, The University of Tennessee, USA & CEO and President, T.M. Young Institute, LLC, USA); Dr. Kailash Narayan Pandey (Professor, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, India); and Dr. Yelena Istileulova (Researcher, University of Ljubljana and Head of STEAM Session of the Socratic Lectures Symposium, Slovenia).

Interventions were also delivered by Dr. Tom Wanyama (Associate Professor, McMaster University, Canada); Dr. Andres Tremante (Professor, Florida International University, USA); Dr. Julia P. Shaw (Professor, SUNY Empire State University, USA); and Dr. Costa Karavas (Assistant Professor, University Canada West, Canada).

The symposium explored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on science, technology, and engineering, with particular emphasis on the evolving relationship between AI and human intelligence, the future of science and engineering education, and the challenges and opportunities arising from the rapid advancement of AI technologies. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Evangelos Xevelonakis (Managing Director, Swiss Valuenet & Professor, HWZ Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Business Administration, Switzerland) has accepted the offer from the Athens Institute to serve as the Deputy Head of the Management Unit.

As Deputy Head, Dr. Xevelonakis will collaborate with the Director of the Business, Economics and Law Division, Dr. Chris Sakellariou (Associate Professor of Economics (Retired), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), and the Head of the Management Unit, Dr. Sharon Claire Bolton (ex. Dean and Emeritus Professor, The Management School, University of Stirling, Scotland), in organizing all conferences and small symposia hosted by the unit.

The Law Unit of the Athens Institute successfully organized the 23rd Annual International Conference on Law, held on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 July 2026 in Athens, Greece.

Over the two days of the conference, 48 papers were presented by academics and researchers from 16 countries: Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Oman, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The conference commenced on Monday morning with the Opening Speech and Welcoming Remarks by Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute and Professor (Adjunct), University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, and Dr. Jorge Emilio Núñez, Head of the Law Unit, Athens Institute, and Reader at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

As part of the conference sessions, two microsymposia (special sessions) were organized, focusing on Environmental Law and Criminal Law, alongside the other sessions of the conference. These special sessions brought together specialists to discuss recent developments and contemporary challenges in these important areas.

The 24th Annual International Conference on Law has already been announced and will take place in Athens, Greece, on 12–13 July 2027.

On Monday 6 July 2026 and Tuesday 7 July 2026, as part of the academic program of the Athens Institute, a Symposium on “Rethinking the Mission of the Modern University” was held over two consecutive sessions.

Part I (Monday 6 July, 13:00–14:00) was moderated by Gregory T. Papanikos, President, Athens Institute & Professor (Adjunct), University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA.

The session featured presentations by Irina Ustinova (Professor, Southeast Missouri State University, USA); Marija Liudvika Drazdauskiene (Professor Emerita, WSB University, University Centre in Warsaw, Poland); Artur Myna (Professor, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland); and Thanos Patelis (Lead Psychometrician, University of Kansas, USA).

Interventions were also delivered by Krasimir Kabakciev; Ziona Strelitz (ZZA Responsive User Environments, UK); Ioannis Karadimitropoulos (Independent Researcher, Germany); Simona Elena Tomozii (Associate Professor, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China); Jane Anastassopoulou (Retired Professor, National Technical University of Athens, Greece); and Malama Tsimenis (Associate Professor, University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada).

The session included presentations by Rosalba Pinto (Professor, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Mexico); Nicole Farris (Professor, East Texas A&M University, USA); Jackie Di Vito (Full Professor, HEC Montréal, Canada); and Clara Germana Gonçalves (Invited Assistant, CIAUD – Research Center for Architecture, Urbanism, and Design, Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Portugal).

Interventions were also delivered by Rogerio Paulo Vieira de Almeida (Professor, ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal); James Irwin (Assistant Professor, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA); Raluca Stan (Associate Professor, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA); Shinian Wu (Professor, Grand Valley State University, USA); and Irina Ustinova (Professor, Southeast Missouri State University, USA).

The symposium examined the evolving mission of the modern university in a period of profound transformation, focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence, changing academic values, institutional sustainability, evolving approaches to teaching and learning, and the future role of higher education in society. Discussions highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing universities as they adapt to technological innovation, shifting student expectations, and new models of knowledge creation and dissemination.

We are pleased to announce that Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad (Romania) has joined the Athens Institute Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (www.atiner.gr/aiumc) as a Collaborating University, supporting the development and international promotion of the competition.

We are also delighted to welcome Professor Codruța Simona Stoica, Rector of Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad and Head of the Mathematics & Statistics Unit of the Athens Institute, to the five-member Steering & Academic Committee of the competition. Professor Stoica brings extensive experience in organizing mathematics competitions for undergraduate students. Romania has a long-standing tradition of excellence in mathematics, with Romanian students achieving outstanding success in numerous national and international competitions. Her expertise will be invaluable in ensuring the academic quality and continued development of the AIUMC.

In addition, Professor Stoica is also the Head of the 21st Annual International Conference on Mathematics: Teaching, Theory & Applications (www.atiner.gr/mathematics), which will take place in Athens, Greece, from 28–30 June & 1-3 July 2027.
