Ο διαγωνισμός CanSat in Greece είναι ένας πανελλήνιος διαγωνισμός διαστημικής. Στόχος του είναι η εξοικείωσή των συμμετεχόντων με τεχνολογίες παρόμοιες με αυτές που χρησιμοποιούνται σε έναν δορυφόρο. Ο μαθητικός διαγωνισμός αποτελεί προκριματική φάση του ευρωπαϊκού διαγωνισμού CanSats in Europe, ο οποίος διοργανώνεται από τον Ευρωπαϊκό Οργανισμό Διαστήματος (ESA) και απευθύνεται σε μαθητές λυκείου. Φέτος για πρώτη χρονιά ο διαγωνισμός διαθέτει κατηγορία και για προπτυχιακούς φοιτητές. Οι ομάδες αποτελούνται από 4 με 6 μέλη και καλούνται να οραματιστούν μια διαστημική αποστολή, να σχεδιάσουν και να κατασκευάσουν έναν εκπαιδευτικό δορυφόρο σε μέγεθος κουτιού αναψυκτικού για να την εκτελέσει. Ο δορυφόρος αυτός εκτοξεύεται σε υψόμετρο ενός χιλιομέτρου και κατά την προσγείωσή με την βοήθεια αλεξίπτωτου εκτελεί την αποστολή που έχει επιλέξει η κάθε ομάδα. The competition is aiming at the participants’ familiarization with technologies like those used in a satellite. The high school students' category stands as a preliminary phase of the European competition CanSats in Europe, organized by the European Space Agency (ESA). This year, for the first time, CanSat in Greece has a university category for undergraduate students! Each team consists of 4-6 members who are tasked with envisioning a research mission and building a soda can sized educational satellite from the ground up to carry it out. The satellite is then launched by a rocket reaching altitude of 1km and during its landing, with the help of a parachute, it executes a unique mission chosen by each team of students. Mission: The establishment of the CanSat in Greece competition at an annual and nation-wide level is the common vision of every volunteer working towards the contest’s realisation. The goal of the competition is to both solidify Greece’s involvement in the European space competitions and nurture a community of students which will turn its attention to space and will recognise the opportunities arising from it. "Our team, inspired by NASA's Kepler mission, has built a small, self-contained and low-cost satellite which is able to inform about the conditions prevailing in unexplored planetary spaces and allows their direct assessment in their natural environment. This is achieved by using suitable sensors that detect atmospheric methane concentration, pressure and temperature. Also, a crucial part of microsatellite's mission is the creation of a three-dimensional visualization of the soil captured by a video taken during its fall.
From this process, information is extracted, such as the inclination of the ground which will be used to characterize the planet's habitat."

🎓 Experimental High School of Patras

“We will design and build a CanSat weighing 300 - 350 grams. This will be launched with a rocket at an altitude of 1000 meters and then separated from it. On landing the descent speed must not exceed 11 meters per second. Our goal is that CanSat drops at a speed of 8 m/s.

The satellite will provide an internet connection to the main computer at the ground, via another computer, which will also be located at ground level. All communications will be made using antennas connected to xbee modules.
When CanSat is separated from the rocket, it will start taking measurements. We may use relay to power the sensors for energy saving purposes. The measurements will be: GPS coordinates, UV radiation, altitude, air temperature, atmospheric pressure, radioactivity intensity.
At the same time it will take photos in an analysis so that they can be transmitted in a short time. All data will be uploaded to a local site of our satellite, accessible from the database via a predetermined IP address.
The measurements will be taken about 5 times per second. Exceptionally, GPS’ data may be taken more frequently and the pictures will be uploaded every 5 seconds. All primary’s mission metrics will be done at least once per second.

CanSat will have a flexible metal cable for antenna. The base will have two directional antennas.
When CanSat lands, communication with the base will become thinner and perhaps some sensors shut down to save energy.”

🎓 A team from Xanthi

“ Our secondary mission is to design a CanSat so that it can cope with an inhospitable environment. As long as it lands on an earth-like planet, it will be stabilized either on smooth or on bumpy terrain. This will be accomplished by adding an “Expansion Plate” mechanism across the two ends of the cylinder. The angle of the inclination will be calculated with a “Tilt Sensor” and so each mechanism will be expanded as needed. For the proper release of the vehicle the exit gate can be rotated so that it is parallel to the ground. The gate will seal with a latch and unlock with a relay mechanism. At the same time, the satellite will perform specific measurements such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, coordinates, magnetic field, acceleration and rotation.”

🎓 26th General Lyceum of Athens (Marasleio)

“The Anti-Spin mission has a multiple secondary missions. Its main objective mission is to stabilize the CanSat with respect to the vertical axis. The idea is based on the principle of maintaining a system 's spin and is implemented through appropriate software, which rotates controllable metal disc taking into account the data from the embedded gyroscope. This technique can be used in cases where it is necessary that a system does not rotate (or oscillate) or rotate controlled, like a boat in a storm.

CanSat also has two cameras that store and send wirelessly images and videos from the ground to the base station. One camera records visible spectrum and the other near infrared (NIR). From the analysis and the comparison of the cameras’ data, we get information for the type of soil (eg existence and quality of vegetation, presence of water surface, etc.). Finally, the team will present a method of predicting the course of dissemination of the sound from a given altitude to the ground based on the vertical temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative humidity distributions. The phenomenon is of particular interest as, among other things, it is related with noise caused by aircraft in areas near airports.”

"The team for Space of Zanneio Experimental Lyceum participates for the second consecutive year in the greek space competition CanSat in Greece with the mission M.A.R.S. (Monitoring Acid Rain System). This year our mission is an original concept, which deals with the prediction of acid rain. In particular, we will detected atmospheric gases for the possible presence of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, as well as atmospheric humidity. In the event of a positive prediction of acid rain over crops or monuments, a servomotor is activated which releases silver iodide in the atmosphere (in this case, of course, it will be water or another harmless liquid) to cause rain early enough to avoid damage to the area of interest. We also have a Automatic Notification System that will be activated to inform residents of the area by sms to take the necessary precautions."

📌 Orion CanSat
🎓 Πρότυπο ΓΕΛ Ευαγγελικής Σχολής Σμύρνης

“Our main goal is to take pictures of the ground in order to detect points of interest, which is a basic application of satellites from the creation of maps up to locating ships at sea. To achieve this, it is necessary for our satellite to “fly” as steadily as possible keeping the camera on the bottom of the CanSat facing the ground. So we developed and implemented an active stabilization system that uses four independent fins and works in a similar way to the Guidance Fins observed in SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
We have also chosen to implement two other satellite tracking systems. Our intention is to have more ways to locate our CanSat for security reasons, since there is a chance that something may not work properly. At the same time we will be able to test the accuracy of our inertial locator and our triangular locator over GPS.

Finally, we will create a database that stores all the data received from the satellite via telemetry and the appropriate software, so that the results of the mission are represented at the same time as CanSat drops to a website.”

👉 Στο πλαίσιο του πανελλήνιου διαγωνισμού διαστημικής Cansat in Greece 2019, οι 16 υπεύθυνοι των μαθητικών και των φοιτητικών Ομάδων κατέφθασαν στην Αθήνα για μια τριήμερη εκπαίδευση στις απαραίτητες τεχνολογίες που θα κληθούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν.

Σε αυτό το τριήμερο οι συμμετέχοντες εκπαιδεύτηκαν σε: 💻Arduino Τεχνολογίες,🚀Διαδικασίες Εκτόξευσης, 🛠️Κατασκευή Αλεξιπτώτου, 👩‍🏫Τεχνικές Παρουσιάσεων, 👥 Τεχνικές Marketing, 🔍 Εύρεση Πόρων και τέλος παρακολούθησαν μία 🔈Ομιλία για το 👩‍🚀Διάστημα!

🤝 Η εκδήλωση διοργανώθηκε από τη SPIN - Space Innovation με την υποστήριξη των: ESA - European Space Agency, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering NTUA, Corallia,si-Cluster του Corallia και IEEE Greece Section.

The ESA Education team is pleased to announce the top 3 final reports that were submitted by student teams, after they competed in the 2018 European CanSat Competition. Last year the final launch campaign was hosted by the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT) in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal.

These final papers were judged by ESA, based on the quality of the presentation and the summary of the teams’ CanSat mission results, the quality of their data analysis, the understanding of the scientific and technical principles underlying their mission, and the overall quality of the work done before, during and after the 2018 launch campaign.
