~Students, stories and an RPG lesson~
We promised you students' stories and you'll get them!
🎓The UPenn professor & The Polish Developer💻
One of our most beloved students who joined Greeky was a UPenn professor and a poet. A. left the US, during the Trump years came to Greece, published two poetry collections influenced by her life in Athens, participated in poetry and writing groups of expats, and after 8 years in Greece, was granted permanent residency. Incredible, isn’t it?
A bit similar to the story above, a Polish expat got carried away by the temperament of Greek people and decided to stay in Greece for good and work as a remote developer!
💑THE COUPLE who left the bombed-out Jerusalem💥
One of the most thrilling of our student’s stories comes from the Middle East. In 2014, T. and Y. left the bombed Jerousalem, seeking a new chapter in Greece. They debarked and settled in Athens to live from up close the political turmoil and cultural reshuffling of the years 2014-2918. A few years later, their artistic insticts led them to the island of Aegina, where they rented a house and envisioned it as being a beacon of creativity. Their home blossomed into a cultural hub, attracting artists from near and far.
📜Two archaeologists from the USA📜
Two of our most beloved students were a beautiful couple of archaeologists, who had come from the US to take part in an excavation here in Greece, both of them brilliant and ambitious. Remarkably, one of them was so eloquent that she managed to translate literary texts by Papadiamantis, one of the most important Greek writers, famous for his ‘mysterious’ language, a blend of colloquial and ancient words, phrases and features.
👾The RPG lesson wooohooo👾

Remember a few days ago when we talked about the 1st oath of secrecy we take in Greeky?
And do you remember what it is?
That's right! It is the famous "Whatever happens within the walls of Greeky, stays there!
Can you imagine why we have such a las-vegas quote?
For no other reason than that so many great stories and friendships actually started in a classroom. And in all the 15+ years that we have been teaching Modern Greek, we have been blessed to either witness or even initiate all kinds of "stories" 😇. How else? We have had students from all over the world, each with their own unique story, getting to know each other and shaping Greeky's profile as a cultural crossroads!
We are proud of that and that is why we are now going to start sharing anonymousl-of course- some of the greatest greek-iest moments!

~μας πλάκωσε το στρώμα~
The phrase "μας πλάκωσε το στρώμα" literally means that the mattress was heavy, fell on us and now it has entombed us and thus we can't get out of bed and it's all the mattress's fault! Not ours!
And we are learning this phrase today because last week's Monday was a Whit Monday, known as Monday of the Holy Spirit.
And whenever there is a major Christian or national holiday, in Greece we usually "get entombed by our mattresses" all week!
But now we are back and ready to hit you with more and more "greeky lessons"😊

Did you know...
that in Greece there is a significant increase in the number of people learning Greek as a foreign/second language due to the multi-ethnic, multilingual and multicultural composition of Greek society.
In November 1998, by Presidential Decree 363/15.10.1998 (Government Gazette 242 /29.10.1998), the Ministry of Education introduced the Greek language certificate.
Greek language courses are now offered in almost all the country's universities, by private institutions in various parts of Greece, by the Prefectural Committees of Popular Education and in the reception centres for expatriates.
A certificate of proficiency in Greek is required:
🎓for the objective and specific assessment of the knowledge of the Greek language as a foreign/second language
🎓enables the user of Greek to have the opinion of a more specific and objective judge of his/her level of knowledge.
So learn your Greek! Join the 'greeky' community!

~με το καλημέρα σας~

The phrase "με το καλημέρα σας"(=no sooner had someone said hello/goodmorning) is said when we give someone a lot of responsibility very early on. In 'greeky' we practice the exact opposite: teaching is tailored to the student's needs and "mistakes" are considered to be natural and expected. No one is pressured to speak or write Greek "με το καλημέρα σας". It will all come out naturally!
So learn what the phrase "με το καλημέρα σας" means and rest assured that this will NOT happen to you!

In 'Greeky' we acknowledge the individual needs and learning styles that each student possesses and we strive to address effectively these variations.
So come and join 'Greeky's' hive and let your Greek bloom!
Be(e) our student!
Be like a be(e) [gr. (=melissa), μέλισσα)]

~greeky lessons~
As a linguist and philologist, my intention is to guide you not only through the pure linguistic elements of the Greek language, but also through the historical facts, the everyday life and their interconnections.
Everyone who joins 'greeky lessons' will learn the Greek language, grammar, syntax and accent, and at the same time we will unfold together the thread of Greek history and modern culture _ or in other words, you will learn how to speak and sound like a real Greek.

~ψαροκόκκαλό~
A few days ago, we promised to reveal the story behind Greeky's logo. Here's the full story of it.
The wooden flooring is nothing contemporary; it made its way into flooring design in the 16th Century and became popular with French nobility.
However, the very specific wooden background of Greeky’s logo is called a herringbone or fishbone pattern [ψαροκόκκαλο (psarokόkalo)] and it’s a knot that beautifully blends language and Athenian interior architecture! The herringbone (ψαροκόκκαλο) floor was the hallmark of - pretty much - every Greek apartment in Athens in the 60s-and 70s. Thus, in the history of modern Greek interior design, this type of floor covering is associated with urbanism.
As an original athenian resident who has been wandering among many apartments of the city's centre, I must confess that Greeky’s logo is actually a collage of some of the floors I have set my foot on, over all these years! And the true desire of this account is exactly this; to shed light on some of the modern Greek signature culture stories and mythologies!
I’ll probably never get over how effortlessly stylish
modern, old Athens can be!
