Supporting a child through a meltdown is not just about what we say or do.
It’s also about what is happening inside us.

Our nervous system responds to their overwhelm.
Their panic can trigger our panic.
Their intensity can activate our urgency.
Their distress can stir our own history of not feeling safe.

So before we can co-regulate a young person, we often need to regulate ourselves.
Not perfectly — just enough to stay steady.

This post shares supportive ways to stay regulated as the adult, so that we can be the grounding presence a child’s nervous system is reaching for in the storm.

Because when we are calm, predictable, and connected — the child feels safe enough to return to calm too.

If you’d like a deeper breakdown of every phase of the meltdown cycle — and how to respond at each stage without shame, fear, or urgency — you’ll find the full Timeline of a Meltdown resource via link in comments below ⬇️ or via Linktree Shop in Bio.

"Play is really the work of childhood." This quote from Fred Rogers is everything.

When kids play, they’re learning in ways that books alone can’t teach. Outside, they explore, create, and grow with every stick, stone, and splash.

Let’s give them the freedom to make nature their classroom!

Let them feel to let them heal.
Because the only way out… is through.

We live in a world that teaches kids to suppress their emotions. To “get over it,” “calm down,” or “stop crying.”

But emotions don’t disappear just because we silence them. They bury themselves deeper—festering, shaping behavior, and hardening into beliefs.

What if instead of shutting it down, we allowed it to rise? What if we stopped fearing the storm and started trusting the clearing that follows?

Because truthfully?
Better out than in.

Tears, tantrums, trembling—these are signs of release, not rebellion. They are the body’s way of processing, clearing, healing.

Let it come. Let it move. Let it pass.
This is the work. This is the way. ❤️

Wisdom today, for writing children's books and for life, from L.R. Knost: "Respecting a child teaches them that even the smallest, most powerless, most vulnerable person is worthy of respect. And that is a lesson our world desperately needs to learn."

Teach your kids to recognize the green flags in people.
The ones who make them feel safe.
The ones who make them feel good about themselves.
The ones who cheer them on and are happy for their wins.
The ones who they can be fully themselves around.

Teach your kids to BE this green flag for others.
The one who makes people felt safe.
The one who acknowledges the good in others.
The one who cheers them on and celebrates their wins.
The one who fully accepts others.

Encourage them to find their green flags and set the example to be one themselves.

This is how you find your people.
