Creating a Safe School Environment: Understanding and Preventing Bullying
Bullying remains one of the major challenges affecting students in schools today. A safe and supportive learning environment is essential for every child to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Understanding what bullying is, its effects, and how schools can prevent it is an important step toward building a healthy school community.
What is Bullying?
Bullying is the repeated use of power, intimidation, or aggression by an individual or group to harm, control, or embarrass another person who may find it difficult to defend themselves. It can occur in several forms, including physical bullying such as hitting or pushing, verbal bullying like insults and name-calling, social bullying through exclusion or spreading rumours, and cyberbullying carried out through social media or online platforms.
Effects of Bullying
Bullying can have serious consequences on students’ emotional, social, and academic development. Victims of bullying often experience low self-esteem, fear, anxiety, and depression. Many students may begin to avoid school, lose concentration in class, and show a decline in academic performance. Socially, bullying can lead to isolation, difficulty in forming friendships, and a lack of confidence in interacting with others. In the long term, the impact of bullying can extend beyond the classroom, affecting a child’s mental health and personal development.
School Policies That Help Prevent Bullying
Schools play a vital role in preventing and addressing bullying. Establishing clear policies and promoting a culture of respect can significantly reduce bullying incidents.
First, schools should have a clear anti-bullying policy that defines bullying and outlines the consequences of such behaviour.
This policy should be communicated clearly to students, teachers, and parents.
Secondly, schools should provide safe and confidential ways for students to report bullying. When cases are reported, they should be handled promptly and fairly to ensure the safety of all students.
Counselling and emotional support services are also important. Both victims and those involved in bullying behaviour should receive guidance and support to address the root causes and encourage positive behaviour.
Schools should also organise awareness programmes, assemblies, and classroom discussions that teach students the values of kindness, empathy, and respect for others. Educating students about the harmful effects of bullying helps build a more supportive school environment.
Finally, teachers and staff should be trained to recognise the signs of bullying and respond appropriately. A strong partnership between teachers, students, and parents helps create a school culture where bullying is not tolerated.
Conclusion
Every child deserves to learn in a safe and supportive environment. That while in Oris British International School we promote respect, encourage open communication, and implemented strong school policies that can effectively reduce bullying and nurture students who are confident, compassionate, and respectful of others.

Technology is no longer optional in education; it is an essential part of effective teaching and learning. It has transformed the classroom by expanding access to information, enhancing collaboration, and making lessons more engaging and interactive.
By embracing technology, teachers can access high-quality resources, innovative teaching tools, and real-time data that support improved instruction and deeper student understanding. At the same time, students are empowered to conduct meaningful research, think critically, and develop the digital skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.

Main Reasons for Giving Assignments (Cambridge Perspective)
In the Cambridge curriculum, assignments are not just “homework”; they are structured learning tools designed to:
1. Reinforce classroom learning
Assignments help students practise and consolidate what has been taught. Cambridge emphasises mastery, not memorisation.
2. Develop independent learning skills
Cambridge learners are expected to be confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged. Well-designed assignments build responsibility and self-discipline.
3. Promote higher-order thinking
Many Cambridge tasks move beyond recall into analysis, evaluation, problem-solving and application — especially in Checkpoint and IGCSE levels.
4. Prepare students for assessment standards
Assignments often mirror exam-style questions, helping students understand command words like describe, explain, evaluate, compare.
5. Encourage research and inquiry
Cambridge promotes enquiry-based learning. Assignments allow students to explore beyond the textbook.
