THE PROBLEM
Regular waste collection is taken for granted in the wealthier parts of the world, but there are still two billion people living in low- and middle-income countries without this basic service. In the absence of such a service, people resort to dumping or incinerating their waste near their place of residence. These practices are harmful to public health, local economies and the environment, especially in regions close to waterways, which are a convenient receptacle for urban waste. THE SOLUTION
