Today 30th March 2026, our students participated in the World Human Genetics Day (WHGD) celebration at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre. The event, organized by the Human Genetics Awareness Association (HUGAA), aimed to highlight the importance of human genetics in public health.

The program featured keynote addresses and sessions on the genetic landscape in The Gambia and Tanzania, the future of medicine, and kidney disease research in African populations. The event also included a mental health panel discussion on caregiving from a genetics perspective, which was interactive and engaging.

Students who attended the event are encouraged to build on the knowledge gained and stay engaged in emerging areas like human genetics and public health research. The event provided valuable insights into current developments and future directions in genetics, emphasizing its growing role in healthcare.

Today, our graduating and current students from the School of Public Health collaborated with the Western One Public Health Officers Association and the Food Safety Unit to conduct a food safety inspection at Serekunda Market. The inspection focused on both fixed vendors with permanent stalls and mobile vendors using wheelbarrows, aiming to ensure that food sold to the public adhered to proper hygiene and safety standards.

Key areas of evaluation included the cleanliness of the vending environment, proper handling and storage of food, and the personal hygiene of vendors. Additionally, inspectors assessed the protection of food from flies, dust, and other contaminants, as well as checked expiration dates on packaged food items to prevent the sale of expired products to consumers.

This initiative provided the students with valuable practical experience in the field, enhancing their understanding of food safety and public health practices. By participating in this inspection, they contributed to the community's welfare while gaining hands-on learning opportunities that will be instrumental in their future careers in public health.
The collaboration between students and health officials underscores the importance of food safety measures in protecting community health.
A warm thank you to Western One PHOs and FSQA for granting this benevolent opportunity to our amazing and gallant students.

*DECLARATION OF INTENT*
Sohna Bah: Candidate for V.President

Students Health Promoters Association (SPHA)

With humility and a strong sense of responsibility, I hereby declare my intention to contest for the position of Vice President of the Students Health Promoters Association. My decision is driven by a deep belief that leadership is about service, unity, and empowering others.

My leadership journey began from serving as a class representative in primary school, Assistant Head Girl in junior secondary school (2017–2019), and President of the Science Club in senior secondary school just to name you few. Within the School of Public Health, I also served as Social Secretary, gaining valuable experience in promoting student engagement and understanding the operations of our association.

As a final-year student, I'm prepared to serve at a higher capacity by strengthening student relationships, improving communication between students and lecturers, supporting council members to build a more inclusive and productive SHPA

Vision for Collective Impact: Mariama Sillah for Vice President
Students Health Promoter Association (SHPA)

To my fellow students of the School of Public Health,
The strength of the Students Health Promoter Association (SHPA) lies in our shared belief that health education can change lives. Having served as your *Assistant Secretary General,* I have seen firsthand the work it takes to keep our association moving forward. My time in that role wasn't just about administration, it was about listening to you, understanding our challenges, and working to ensure our campaigns actually reached the people who needed them most.

Throughout my journey at the University of Education, I have always believed that our education is most valuable when we use it to serve others. I have had the privilege of representing our school on a public platform, an experience that taught me the importance of clear communication in health advocacy. Alongside my academic studies, I have embraced various leadership opportunities that have shaped my approach to teamwork: I believe a leader’s job is to listen first and act in the best interest of the collective.
My goal as your Vice President is to foster an environment where every SHPA member feels empowered to contribute. I am not looking to change what we do, but rather to strengthen how we do it. I want to build on the foundation we already have.. expanding our peer-led initiatives and creating more opportunities for us to practice our skills in the real world.

I am running for this position because I care deeply about the success of this association and every student within it. I bring a steady hand, a collaborative spirit, and a proven track record of showing up for SHPA.
Let’s work together to make this year our most impactful one yet.
