Gambia Excluded From List of Eligible Countries for the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals.

It is with great concern that we learnt of the exclusion of the Gambia from the list of eligible countries for the prestigious SI scholarship for 2024/2025 academic year. Over the recent years, the SI scholarship has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for many Gambians - with many Gambians graduating at Masters level in critical disciplines needed for the economy and development of the Gambia. You will find graduates from Swedish universities through this scholarship in various sectors of the economy and within international development organizations significantly contributing towards the development and transformation of this country.

Whilst this could be due to shifts in diplomatic relations amongst other possible factors, the SI Alumni executive are in contact with the SI board to find out the rationale behind this decision and whether some specific criteria or considerations led to this outcome. We will explore avenues within our limits to advocate for the reintroduction of the Gambia into the list of eligible countries for this prestigious scholarship.

Meanwhile, we will want to advise all prospective applicants to the scholarship to hold off making any application payments given the circumstances. However this does not in any way stop self-sponsored students to carry on with their application to university admissions and also those with interest in pursuing and applying for the school scholarships that are available at various universities.

We will keep you all posted as this development unfolds.

If a graduate would tell you all about studying in Sweden, what would they say? ๐Ÿค” This is what Ivanna, former international student writes on the Study in Sweden blog:

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Yes, the first days can be overwhelming, everything is new, different and sometimes even weird. A simple thing like doing laundry can become a challenging situation; but if something Iโ€™ve learned in my year here itโ€™s that one shouldnโ€™t worry too much, eventually everything will fall into place and you will feel โ€œhomeโ€. Just take it day by day. Step by step. Be ready to me amazed, to learn, to discover, to break all paradigms while living to the fullest."๐ŸŒŸ

Find all Ivanna's advice in her letter to new students.

At an informal event held last evening at a local beach bar, the Swedish Institute Alumni Network Gambia Chapter bid farewell to about 10 Gambian SI Scholarship recipients. The new awardees will be travelling to Sweden in the coming days to undergo various Masters degree programs in various universities across Sweden.

The Alumni network continues to provide support to countless Gambians who are interested in pursuing Masters studies in Sweden. We remain grateful to the Swedish Institute for continually granting numerous Gambians the opportunity to study in Sweden.
