Benefits of after school studies!

Introduction.
The After- School Studies is mostly a common practice among the international and national Schools everywhere most especially here in The Gambia. It is all about the students staying back one or more hours after the normal closing time. This excercise has helped many struggling and students without focus improved beyong measured. After-school studies both includes (extra lessons, tutoring, or structured study time outside regular school hours) can make a noticeable difference in a student’s development. Here are the key benefits:

1. Better academic performance.
Extra study time reinforces what was taught in class. Students get more practice, which improves understanding and leads to better grades.

2. Stronger study habits.
Regular after-school learning builds discipline, time management and consistency—skills that carry into higher education and work life.

3. Individual attention.
In smaller groups or one-on-one settings, students can ask more questions and get help tailored to their specific weaknesses.

4. Boosted confidence.
When students understand subjects better, they feel more confident participating in class and taking exams.

5. Safe and productive use of time.
After-school programs keep students engaged in a structured environment, reducing idle time like over screen life that could be spent on unproductive or other risky activities especially when the parents or Guardians might not be there.

6. Opportunity to explore interests
Some after-school programs include activities like reading clubs, science projects, or creative arts, helping students discover talents and passions.

7. Improved social skills
Working with peers in a smaller setting encourages collaboration, communication, and teamwork.

8. Preparation for exams and future goals
Extra lessons can focus on exam techniques, revision strategies, and long-term academic goals.

Conclusion.
After- School Studies is good and wonderful for students but it could carry a little extra finincial burden. However, nothing good comes very easy. AgainThere is need to balance matters—too much extra study without rest can lead to burnout. The best results come from a mix of study, prayer and good rest. And now is the best time to focus the kids to better learning and understanding in their various study areas.

Negative Attitudes to Learning in Gambian Schools: Fact or Fancy?

Introduction.
The idea that many students show negative attitudes toward learning in Gambian schools is largely a fact, though it is often misunderstood. In reality, students’ attitudes everywhere toward learning are shaped by several social, economic, and educational conditions, etc rather than simple laziness or unwillingness to study.
Let us reason together on these crucial matter.

1. What is a Negative Attitude to Learning?
A negative attitude to learning refers to behaviours such as:
Lack of interest in lessons, quarreling or fighting during class or even gossiping.
Frequent absenteeism or lateness
Poor participation in class, loitering around during class.
Disrespect for teachers or school rules
Preference for quick money or street activities instead of education.
These behaviours can appear common in some schools, but they do not arise without causes.
2. Why It Is a Fact
There are several realities in The Gambia that influence students’ learning attitudes.
a) Poverty and Economic Pressure
Many students come from low-income families where survival is the priority. Some children engage in farming, street vending, or domestic work to support their families, which reduces their commitment to school.
b) Language Barriers
English is the official language of instruction in schools, but most children grow up speaking local languages such as Mandinka, Wolof, or Fula etc. This makes it difficult for some pupils to understand lessons, leading to frustration and loss of interest.
c) Poor Learning Environment
Many schools face challenges such as:
Overcrowded classrooms
Lack of textbooks and learning materials
Poor infrastructure
Such conditions discourage students from being enthusiastic learners.
d) Teacher-Related Challenges
Teacher absenteeism and limited teaching time also affect students’ attitudes. Studies show that around 14% of teachers may be absent from school at least once a week,
