Non-communicable diseases are classified as diseases that are not transmissible from one person to another such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension. According to a world health organisation (WHO) report, non-communicable diseases account for 41 million deaths annually, making up 71% of all deaths globally. Our next speaker, Dr Bai Cham, is an epidemiologist who will give us an overview of the increasing burden on non-communicable diseases in The Gambia. The advent of modern medicine and science has significantly contributed to the reported increase in life expectancy as we know it. However, this increase has also led to the rise in the manifestation of age-related complications such as neurodegenerative disorders. Our next speaker, Dr. Louis Dwomoh, is a neuroscientist at the University of Glasgow who will take us through the current state of neuroscience research in Africa with regards to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
