Researchers from Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU and Aarhus Universitet just returned from a three-weeks fieldwork in , conducting extensive mapping of permafrost in the sedimentary areas around the town. The two main practical issues we focused on were:
1️⃣ the ice contents in the permafrost 👉 to evaluate the risk of ground settlement upon the new airport road construction;
2️⃣ the salinity/salt contents in the sediments 👉 to evaluate the risk of surface water interaction with the salts in thawing permafrost;
The results of our investigations will provide the Avannaata Kommunia and Nukissiorfiit with additional information for planning of the new transportation and water supply infrastructure.

The photos show some of the many highlights of our stay in Ilulissat. Thanks to Johanna Scheer, Marco Marcer , Thomas Højland Lorentzen, Andy Kass, Jakob Theodor Åkerman Nielsen, Thomas Ingeman-Nielsen and the project partners who contributed to the success of the campaign for their outstanding work and excellent company !
Stay tuned for the results...!

At DTU Byg, we are working towards a road damage registration framework for areas. The framework will allow to evaluate the cost of repeated maintenance of the most problematic sections of the roads.
Arctic climate provides challenging conditions for paved roads and they deteriorate more severely than in milder climates. Cost of road network maintenance weights heavily on already tight municipal budgets. The framework will be a basis for considering alternative construction and maintenance strategies. Read on for more info ⬇️

The framework consists of three main stages:
1️⃣ registering types and locations of road damages,
2️⃣ linking the nature of road damages to ground conditions (thermal and geotechnical),
3️⃣ registering frequency, extent and cost of repairs.

This registration will highlight the “hot spots” – the most severely affected road sections and the cost of their repeated repairs. Alternative construction and maintenance strategies can then be proposed, following a thorough ground investigation and choice of suitable permafrost thaw mitigation techniques.

A template for the road damage registration was developed over this past year, based on field observations of road network in Ilulissat and dialogue with Avannaata Kommunia. The GIS integration has been done by our PhD student Johanna Scheer.
This summer and fall, we hope to complete the road damage registration in Sisimiut.

Hjælp forskere i at registrere fund af plast i forbindelse med fugle i Grønland, mere information kan findes i linket.

Help researchers register incidents of plastic in relation to birds in Greenland. Please see the link for more information.

Birds & Debris is a website launched by the Environmental Research Institute, UHI to highlight the global impact of plastic pollution.

‼️ If you are in Sisimiut this Thursday, do not miss the NIS Grønlands Forskningsråd popular science event in Taseralik - Sisimiut Cultural Centre ‼️
Come to learn about research on water supply challenges in cold regions (from Judith Maréchal, PhD student at DTU Byg), on and (from Marco Marcer, Postdoc at DTU Byg), but also to witness vertical dancing and take part in conversations about research with researchers.

We are expanding monitoring network in Greenland!

The Greenland Integrated Observatory System is a new multi-disciplinary initiative that will, over the course of the next five years, expand automated long-term monitoring research infrastructure in the arctic sea, atmosphere, land and on the ice sheet.
At DTU Civil Engineering, we will build a network of six permafrost monitoring stations on the stretch between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut in West Greenland. The area is the widest ice-free land area in West Greenland, and it is uniquely located on the current border between land with and without permafrost. The climate change effects on permafrost retreat will therefore be very discernible here.

The collaboration includes 14 universities and institutions in Denmark 🇩🇰, Greenland 🇬🇱 and Faroe Islands 🇫🇴.
