Researchers from Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU and Aarhus Universitet just returned from a three-weeks fieldwork in , conducting extensive mapping of permafrost in the sedimentary areas around the town. The two main practical issues we focused on were:
1️⃣ the ice contents in the permafrost 👉 to evaluate the risk of ground settlement upon the new airport road construction;
2️⃣ the salinity/salt contents in the sediments 👉 to evaluate the risk of surface water interaction with the salts in thawing permafrost;
The results of our investigations will provide the Avannaata Kommunia and Nukissiorfiit with additional information for planning of the new transportation and water supply infrastructure.
The photos show some of the many highlights of our stay in Ilulissat. Thanks to Johanna Scheer, Marco Marcer , Thomas Højland Lorentzen, Andy Kass, Jakob Theodor Åkerman Nielsen, Thomas Ingeman-Nielsen and the project partners who contributed to the success of the campaign for their outstanding work and excellent company !
Stay tuned for the results...!
