The dark season is approaching – and with it, the spirits begin to make themselves known at night again.

My daughters are often the first to sense it.

Last night they came running downstairs, terrified. I had come home from work carrying something with me that I should not have brought into our home.

The television turned itself on and off. The cat moved with her belly low to the floor, staring towards the stairs. From behind the blackout curtains came a sound like creaking wheels.

Watching the girls’ fear was difficult.

There are moments in this work when I miss a detail. When I don’t close something properly, or realise quickly enough that something has followed me. Those moments make me deeply angry with myself – especially when my children are the ones who sense it before I do.

But I am not without teachings for what happens next.

My mother knows this world.

My grandfather knew it.

My great-grandmother knew it.

My lineage has cleared spirits from homes since before time. So when I stand in my own home today, quietly reciting the words I have been taught while clearing out, I am drawing from experience that did not begin with me.

And today, the teaching continues with my daughters.

Familia ♥️

We are navigating the idea of a happy divorce.

We have been partners for 10 years. We have two daughters together.

And in a week, we will travel together with our daughters — without making them responsible for the transformation taking place between the adults.

We are in the midst of moving from being a couple into something else.

But we are not ceasing to be a family.

Many children of divorce know the heavy conversation: Mum and Dad have decided that they are no longer going to be together. The family is going to be divided. Two homes. Two lives. A time before and a time after.

That was also how I imagined the end of a relationship had to be.

Until a friend asked me:

“Why do you think you have to split the family apart? You will always be a family.”

That sentence changed something in me.

Because, of course.

A relationship can end. But what we have created together does not disappear.

We have children together. We have lived a decade side by side. We know each other’s families, stories, flaws and strengths. We have carried each other through periods of life that no one else has witnessed.

My East Greenlandic family taught me that love has a lifespan.

Not all love is meant to remain in the same form for an entire lifetime.

Sometimes it is not the love that disappears. It is its form that has come to an end.

Is family only something that exists for as long as two adults love each other as a couple?

Kinship is relationship.

It is responsibility.

It is the people we are bound to through our children, through life, and through what we have already created together.

So perhaps divorce does not always have to be the story of a family breaking apart.

For us, it is about the form changing.

We are no longer husband and wife. But we are still Mum and Dad. We will still sit around the same table. Celebrate our children. Help each other. Be there when life hurts and when there is something to celebrate.

We are choosing to remain together around our children — not simply as two people managing a custody arrangement, but as a family.

That does not mean everything has been happy.

Nor does it mean that ten years can simply be laid down without grief.

But there are endings that do not have to become destruction.

In the East Greenlandic understanding I carry with me, a human being does not exist alone. We stand in relation to those who came before us, those who stand around us, and those who will come after us.

So when something changes form, we must also ask:

What are we passing on?

Our daughters do not have to inherit the story that love only succeeds if two people remain together as a couple forever.

Perhaps they can also be allowed to see that love can mean knowing when something is complete — without turning each other into enemies.

That you can set each other free.

And still belong together.

Not as spouses.

But as family.

That is the family we are choosing to care for now.

May the little ones remain whole and protected by the love we share for them. 🩷🩷

Life changes with the speed of lightning.

Years ago, I was told this time would come. Even so, I wasn’t prepared for it to actually—truly, genuinely—happen.

I’m travelling south to Ibiza. Not for work, but to visit someone who means a great deal to me. 💜

When I return, I’ll be filming with an American crew about surviving a su***de attempt—and about the strength that can be found through one’s culture.

Colonization broke something in our family. It left wounds that lived on not only in those who experienced it, but also in the generations that followed. And yet, what was broken can find its way toward healing. I believe we carry a memory that is older than our own lives—a memory that has lived on through our lineage and, quietly, has been guiding us home.

That is the story I want to tell.

Then comes my youngest child’s first day of school. After that, summer with my eks husband and the little ones in Denmark. And then, Ibiza again.

There is change in the air. Not the kind that tears us apart, but the kind that calls us toward where we truly belong.

I don’t know exactly how it will all unfold. But I know I’m on the right path.

Everything will find its place. Safely. Gently. With love intact.

We move forward together—not as the family we once were, but as the family we are becoming.

The image is of the goddess Tanit, whom I encountered during shamanic drum journeys and later sculpted in clay ten years ago. At the time, I didn’t understand who she was.

Now I do.

Finally, I know whose power has been whispering to me through the mist all these years.
