Lighting the Path to Education: A Call to Extend Streetlights to Northern Star Senior High School
The recent extension of street lighting in Wa Central, particularly to Mangu ending at the Mangu damp marks a commendable effort by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to improve infrastructure and public safety. The people of Mangu have every reason to feel appreciative and encouraged by this development. It signals attention to a community that has long needed such intervention and reflects a step in the right direction toward local development.
However, while this progress is worthy of recognition, it also highlights an urgent gap that deserves immediate consideration: the unlit and untarred road leading to Northern Star Senior High School.
For students, teachers, and residents who use this road daily, the absence of street lighting presents serious challenges. At night, the road becomes enveloped in darkness, raising concerns about safety, mobility, and access. Students who engage in evening studies or extracurricular activities or return from academic programs after dusk are particularly vulnerable. Teachers and staff also face similar risks, which can affect morale and willingness to remain on campus after hours.
Education is widely regarded as the backbone of national development, and institutions like Northern Star Senior High School play a vital role in shaping Ghana’s future human capital. It is therefore essential that the environment surrounding such institutions supports not hinders learning and safety. Infrastructure, even something as seemingly basic as street lighting, can significantly influence educational outcomes. A well-lit road does more than provide visibility; it fosters a sense of security, encourages academic engagement beyond daylight hours, and strengthens community confidence in public institutions.
The current state of the road untarred and dark, further compounds the issue. During the rainy season, it becomes difficult to navigate, and at night, the lack of visibility increases the risk of accidents and other security concerns. Extending the street lighting to the school would not only address these issues but also demonstrate a deeper commitment to equitable development.
It is important to emphasise that the people of Mangu are not ungrateful. On the contrary, they recognise and appreciate the efforts already made by the MCE. Their appeal is rooted in hope and a desire for inclusive progress. Extending the streetlights to Northern Star Senior High School is not an extravagant demand; it is a practical and impactful continuation of an already commendable project.
Leadership is often measured not just by what has been achieved but by the willingness to respond to evolving community needs. In this case, the need is clear, the benefits are substantial, and the impact would be far-reaching.
As such, we respectfully call on the MCE to consider extending the street lighting project beyond the Mangu damp to Northern Star Senior High School. Doing so would not only enhance safety and accessibility but also reaffirm a commitment to education and community well-being.
Lighting the road to a school is, in many ways, lighting the path to a brighter future.
