Nusrat Jahan Ahmadiyya College of Education is in Wa, the Regional Capital of the Upper West Region. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
Nusrat Jahan Ahmadiyya Muslim College of Education as it is known today was established in 1970 as a girls’ academy by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission. They pursued various academic subjects leading to the award of school certificate by the West African Examination Council. As a Secondary School, its first Headmistress was Madam Na-eema Munir. The School became a Training College in 1982, when the then Wa (WACO) and Kanton (KANCO) Training Colleges in the same region were both converted to Secondary Schools. The Mission thought it wise to open a Teacher Training College to cater for the dwindling or short fall of teachers in the whole region. Mas'ud Ahmed Shams who was the last Headmaster and the first Principal transitioned the school into a Teacher Training College. Since its transition in 1982, the College has under gone three main transformations. From 1982 to 1991, it turned out teachers with Certificate ‘A’ (a 4- year post-middle graduates). In 1983, the Modular programme was introduced into the system of Teacher Education to enable Post Middle School unqualified teachers to spend two-years as external student teachers before entering the Training Colleges as regular students for the third and fourth years of training. From 1991 to 1995 it ran two programmes concurrently – a 3 –year post-secondary programme and a 4-year post middle certificate which was a government policy directed at giving quality training to pupil teachers who were eventually awarded a 3-year post-secondary certificate and 4-Year post middle certificate respectively. NJA is one of the Science-Bias Colleges of Education in the country and runs three programmes which include: General, Mathematics/Science and Mathematics/Technical programmes. Students from all over the country are admitted into the college provided those seeking admission have the required entry requirements, irrespective of their religious and ethnic backgrounds. The college is an integrated College of Education giving opportunity to visually impaired students to pursue the General programme with their sighted colleagues. All Colleges of Education in the Country run a 3-year Diploma in Basic Education certificate programme. Today the College has produced people with varied skills and abilities who are in various occupations and trade, providing valuable services to mother Ghana. God bless you all.
