UBIDS Hosts 23rd SSA-UoG National Executive Committee Meeting

The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) successfully hosted the 23rd National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) on Thursday, 6th August 2026, at Lecture Hall 3C, Bamahu Campus. The meeting brought together delegates from public universities across the country to discuss issues relating to the welfare of senior staff and the advancement of higher education in Ghana.

Welcoming the delegates, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel K. Derbile, expressed his delight that UBIDS had been selected to host the quarterly meeting. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to academic excellence, staff development, and stakeholder engagement, while encouraging participants to exchange ideas and develop practical strategies that would enhance staff welfare and contribute to the continued growth of Ghana’s public universities.

The National Chairman of SSA-UoG commended the UBIDS Branch and the Local Organising Committee for the excellent organisation and warm hospitality extended to delegates. He expressed confidence that the deliberations of the meeting would yield meaningful resolutions to advance the Association and promote the interests of its members.

The successful hosting of the meeting further underscores UBIDS’ growing role as a hub for national dialogue, collaboration, and thought leadership in Ghana’s higher education sector.

UBIDS Vice-Chancellor Chairs Commissioning of Expanded Dialysis Unit at Upper West Regional Hospital

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Prof. Emmanuel K. Derbile, on Tuesday, 4th August 2026, chaired the commissioning of the expanded Dialysis Unit at the Upper West Regional Hospital.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Derbile described the occasion as a historic milestone that brings renewed hope to patients requiring renal care in the region. He commended the collaborative efforts of the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Upper West Parliamentary Caucus, Sustainable Health Education and Interventions Limited (SHIELD), the Upper West Regional Hospital, and other partners whose collective support made the project a reality.

Prof. Derbile noted that beyond improving access to quality healthcare, the expanded dialysis facility significantly strengthens UBIDS' efforts to operationalise its School of Medicine and Health Sciences in partnership with the Upper West Regional Hospital. He emphasised that the expanded facility will provide an important platform for the clinical training of future doctors and other health professionals, while deepening the University's contribution to healthcare delivery and human capital development in the Region.

FIDS Strengthens Academic Mentorship and Leadership Development
The Faculty of Integrated Development Studies (FIDS) of the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) organised a one-day seminar on academic mentorship and leadership development on Tuesday, 4th August 2026, at Lecture Hall 3C, Bamahu Campus.

The seminar brought together Heads of Department, faculty members, students, and members of the University community to explore the critical role of mentorship in academic growth, leadership succession, and institutional development.

Opening the programme, the Dean of FIDS, Prof. Africanus L. Diedong, underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in advancing the Faculty and the University.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley, Lecturer at the University for Development Studies and former Vice-Chancellor of Dr Hilla Limann Technical University, encouraged academics to embrace mentorship as a lifelong process that fosters professional growth, leadership development, knowledge sharing, and institutional continuity.
Emphasising the importance of mentorship, he noted:
"Without mentorship and good leadership, it is difficult to navigate the jungle of academia."

The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion, where participants exchanged ideas and experiences on strengthening mentorship and leadership in higher education.

UBIDS Engages SHS Counsellors and Assistant Heads(Academics) to
Stregthen Student Career Guidance and Admissions.

The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies(UBIDS), on Thursday, 30th July 2026, hosted a strategic engagement seminar for Senior High School Counsellors and Assistant Headmasters (Academic) from across the Upper West Region.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Issaka Osumanu Kanton, reaffirmed UBIDS' commitment to strengthening partnerships with second-cycle institutions to ensure prospective students receive accurate information on academic programmes, admissions, scholarships, and career pathways.

The seminar also featured presentations by Mr. Iddrisu Abubakari Ayamba, University Counsellor, on effective career guidance, and Mr. Moomin Abubakar, Assistant Registrar, who took participants through UBIDS' academic programmes, admission requirements, scholarships, and application procedures.

Speaking on behalf of the Upper West Regional Director of Education, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Amos Gyetuo, the Public Relations Officer, commended the initiative, noting that it would help bridge the information gap between Senior High Schools in Upper West Region and the University, enabling counsellors to provide more accurate guidance to students as they make informed academic and career choices.

The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment to sustained collaboration between UBIDS and Senior High Schools to support informed educational and career choices for prospective students.

UBIDS in collaboration with Wageningen University Advanced Dialogue on Decolonising Education

The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, in collaboration with Wageningen University, Netherlands, organised a workshop on the theme, "Decolonising Education," on 23rd July 2026 at the West African Centre for Sustainable Rural Transformation (WAC-SRIT).

The workshop brought together academics, researchers, development practitioners, undergraduates and postgraduate students to examine inclusive and context-responsive approaches to teaching, research, and knowledge production. Dr. George Dery, Director of WAC-SRT, on behalf of Management, gave the official welcome to pave the way for the commencement of the dialogue session which was facilitated by Birgit Boogaard, Senior Lecturer at Wageningen University, Netherlands, and Daniel Banuoku, Executive Director of the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD).

The facilitators highlighted the importance of deconstructing colonial educational legacies bequeathed to us and integrating indigenous knowledge systems into higher education, fostering equitable knowledge partnerships, and promoting collaborative research to address contemporary context-specific development challenges. Participants reflected on strategies for curriculum innovation, community engagement, and context-specific research, while the workshop further explored areas of partnership between UBIDS, CIKOD, and Wageningen University and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing inclusive scholarship and sustainable development.

UBIDS Strengthens Academic Partnership with Wageningen University

The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies today, 22nd July 2026, welcomed a delegation of academics from Wageningen University and their local partners during a courtesy call on the University's Management.

The engagement focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two institutions in agriculture, food systems, indigenous knowledge, research, innovation, community development, and the decolonisation of education.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel K. Derbile, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Issaka Kanton Osumanu, reaffirmed UBIDS' commitment to deepening collaboration through joint research, staff and student exchanges, curriculum development, grant opportunities, and community-based initiatives.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to advancing academic excellence, impactful research, and sustainable development through stronger institutional collaboration.
